The tables have turned. Now I have the power—and it’s his turn to beg…

Everyone wants to be me.

Maybe it’s the sway of my skirt or the way I flip my hair, but I don’t care. Even though their attention is the last thing I crave, I just can’t stop. I dominate the track, the speed rattles my bones, and the wind and the crowd screams my name.

I’m her. The girl driver. The queen of the race. And I’m surviving—something he thought I’d never do.

They all talk about him. Did you see Jared Trent on T.V? What did you think of his last race, Tate? When is he coming back to town, Tate?

But I refuse to care too much. Because when Jared does come home, I won’t be here.

Tatum Brandt is gone. I’m someone new.

I never liked reading as a kid. I only started reading romance novels in the past few years. My Kindle and I are inseparable now. It didn’t take long to figure out that I really enjoy writing.

Happy Release Day! Excerpt & Giveaway: The Consequences of Loving Colton, Consequence #1 by Rachel Van Dyken

It’s all fun and games…until someone’s heart is broken.

They’re not kids anymore, but Milo Caro is certain that Colton Mathews will only see her as his best friend’s little sister for the rest of their lives. After all, he made that clear the night before she left for college. But four years later, her brother is getting married and Colt’s the best man—and guess who is the best man’s last-minute date?

Milo vows to use the wedding to either claim the smoldering firefighter’s heart or douse this torch for good. When Max—her best friend from college, who may be carrying a torch of his own—crashes the party, they devise a plan to make Colt see what he’s missing. But after Colt catches on, he decides to cook up his own revenge.

Now it’s personal. Colt and Milo are at war, and between Max’s questionable acting methods, an unfortunate trip to jail, and a maniacal fiancée, what could possibly go right?

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Max gave me a tender shove. “We were fine until you started stepping on my foot and elbowing me!”

“You were hitting on my mom!”

“She’s a beautiful lady!” he argued.

“Oh, my gosh.” I fell into one of the chairs and moaned. “This is a catastrophe.”

“Not true.” Max shook his head. “You just have to be more believable. I mean, would it kill you to find me screw-worthy?”

“Screw-worthy? What does that even mean?”

“That’s it.” Max grabbed my hand and pulled me down the hall. “Where’s the bathroom?”

“Uh . . .” I pointed.

With a jerk he had me in the bathroom under the stairs and closed the door. Words and sounds were coming out of his mouth but I couldn’t make anything out. Max pushed me against the door and pointed his finger in my face. “I’m going to kiss you, damn it, and you’re going to like it. And I’m going to take off my shirt and you’re going to manhandle me, and you’re going to stop being so damn nervous or so help me God I’m going to bend you over that sofa in the living room and spank your sexy ass.”

Shocked, I was paralyzed in place. “Where did that come from?”

“Inside.” Max looked at me and smirked. “I have lots of feelings and I’m sick and tired of you looking at me like I don’t have a penis. I may be used to your innocence but for my own pride at least try to be attracted to me. Now close your damn eyes.”

“Stop cursing at me.”

“Stop being difficult! I’m trying to help you. And stop squirming. Shit, take a Xanax or something.”

“Max.” I closed my eyes and huffed. “This isn’t going to—”

My hand was on something hard.

I blinked my eyes open.

Since when did he have a six-pack?

I tilted my head, you know, to get a better look. His skin was really smooth but bumpy, each muscle defined so much that there was enough of a ridge for my hands to play with.

“Oh, look, he’s a man after all,” Max said, sounding bored. “I’m not your sexless friend. I’m not your damn brother. I’m not your gay friend. And I sure as hell am not thinking about anything right now except that your hands feel really good against my skin. So I’m going to kiss you, and you’re going to respond like the idea of my mouth on yours doesn’t make you want to cry—and you’ll like it.”

“I’ll like it,” I repeated.

“There’s my girl.” His eyes flashed, and then he was kissing me again, only this time his body was on fire as it pressed against me. I felt every ridge of his abs; the length of his body was beyond devastating.

Happy Release Day! Excerpt & Giveaway: Wrecked, Starstruck #2 by Cynthia Valero

Wrecked Cover
goodreads

Welcome to STARSTRUCK, a showplace for talent, a playground for love. A new contemporary continuity series by Beth Ciotta, Cynthia Valero, and Elle J Rossi. Three authors. One world. The hot nights continue with Valero’s emotional new-adult novella, Wrecked. A Secret Crush… Talented songwriter, Sunny Burnett, shelves her dream of Nashville when her older sister is killed in a car wreck and helps her mother pick up the pieces of her shattered life. Two years later, her mother’s still struggling and Sunny is desperate to help her. Dusting off her guitar, penning a new song, and marshaling her courage, she enters a duet contest, hoping to use the prize money to turn her mother's life around. She’ll do anything to win. Even if it means partnering with the last man she should ask—her sister’s ex-boyfriend, a gifted singer and Sunny’s longtime secret crush. A Clandestine Choice… Curtis Bliss blames himself for Tuesday Burnett’s death. And so does her family. Haunted by regret, he forfeits his musical dreams for years, until he’s challenged by an unexpected source—his ex’s younger sister. Sunny Burnett blows him away by asking for his help and, in turn, offering him a tentative forgiveness. Even more surprising is the burning attraction that ignites and consumes them both. Can the new lovers make their dreams come true after all? Or will the secrets they keep wreck them forever?

They stood facing each other, like desperadoes destined for showdown in a deserted alley. Her cowboy hat dangled from her fingers, her unshaded eyes zeroed right in on him. Bright blue to stop a train. And his heart felt like it indeed slammed to a halt and everything inside him collided forward, right toward her, just as it had yesterday. But those eyes didn’t swallow him whole, willingly and languorously, like her sister’s deep brown ones had. There was no refuge in Sunny’s gaze. They glinted and reflected everything right back to him. No more sixteen year old with thick glasses. No more curling around herself with awkwardness. No hiding behind the porch steps to watch him and Tuesdaysing, thinking he didn’t know she was there. She didn’t move. He didn’t move. “You’re here,” she finally said. “Again.” It was an accusation. “It’s the last time.” He tore his gaze from her. The unbound hair, thick and dark like Tuesday’s, flowing free around her shoulders, almost to the small of her back. He gripped the hand truck handles, his fingers desperate to touch that hair instead of the damned grass at Tuesday’s memorial every night. Just once, to feel it against his cheek, to— He yanked the keg onto the service ramp. “Wait.” No. Everything inside him shouted no. “Please.” He stopped. She tapped her knuckles against her mouth as though in thought. She smacked her hat against her thigh. After a few breaths, she eyed him from an angle, as though he were suddenly painful to look at. She sighed and it sounded just a little bit defeated. He knew the feeling. She gripped her handbag with white-knuckled fingers and stalked toward him. She was beautiful beyond any memory of her, and his gut twisted. Perhaps it was best to get this done. Perhaps it was what he should’ve done from the start because now that it was here, he was suddenly ready for it. He gripped the hand truck for support, ready to take whatever she could give, ready to take it and bear it because it was what he deserved. He was ready for her to hurt him. He wanted it. Bring it.

She’s infected.

He gives me a sad smile. “Aren’t you always the one telling me to grow up once and for all? Always saying I’m … how did you put it?” He makes air quotes. “‘Perfectly irrational’? Hmm?”

Xave waits for me to say something. But what is there to say?

He continues. “For once I’m trying to see past my narrow, judgmental views. I’m … expanding my horizons. Breaking stereotypes. And you don’t approve?”

I cross my arms over my stained t-shirt. “Is that what you’re calling your sexcapades now?” There’s a twist of bitter lemon on top of my comment.

“Again … even if that’s what this is all about, why do you care?”

I wish he’d stop beating on that drum. It makes me feel hollow inside.

“You’ve never cared before,” he says, having found a more bitter substance than mine to make his point.

Our eyes lock and the silence between us swells and swells with an absence of words that need to be figured out. But I’m dry as a bone. I have nothing to give, nothing to offer. I’m the one who’s perfectly irrational. It takes one to know one, after all.

“The world is going to hell, Marci. I may as well enjoy it while it lasts. I can’t … wait forever.” His last two words are loaded with meaning.

Is he trying to say that he’s … waiting for me? I shrink away from the thought. That can’t be what he’s trying to say! Why doesn’t he just tell me what he means? My mouth hangs open, a mute “O” of incredulity. Is this the way he chooses to let me know? A way that is, by no means, clear.

“We should talk. There’s something I should tell you and maybe something you’d like to say to me?” Xave tells me in a sweet, inviting tone. He leans closer, hazel eyes drilling mine with heated intensity.

His hand—up till now resting on the table—moves inches slowly toward mine. His fingernails are blue from the cue chalk. I see the Celtic tattoo between his middle and fore fingers. It’s so small I always forget about it. My body tenses and I instinctively pull back a bit. And even though my fingers retract only a few inconsequential millimeters, the distance feels insurmountable, because Xave’s eyes darken with the knowledge that I’ve recoiled from him. Again.
