Book Blitz- Author Interview & Giveaway! The Heartbeat Thief by A.J. Krafton

Haunted by a crushing fear of death, a young Victorian woman discovers the secret of eternal youth—she must surrender her life to attain it, and steal heartbeats to keep it.

In 1860 Surrey, a young woman has only one occupation: to marry. Senza Fyne is beautiful, intelligent, and lacks neither wealth nor connections. Finding a husband shouldn’t be difficult, not when she has her entire life before her. But it’s not life that preoccupies her thoughts. It’s death—and that shadowy spectre haunts her every step.

So does Mr. Knell. Heart-thumpingly attractive, obviously eligible—he’d be her perfect match if only he wasn’t so macabre. All his talk about death, all that teasing about knowing how to avoid it…

When her mother arranges a courtship with another man, Senza is desperate for escape from a dull prescripted destiny. Impulsively, she takes Knell up on his offer. He casts a spell that frees her from the cruelty of time and the threat of death—but at a steep price. In order to maintain eternal youth, she must feed on the heartbeats of others.

It’s a little bit Jane Austen, a little bit Edgar Allen Poe, and a whole lot of stealing heartbeats in order to stay young and beautiful forever. From the posh London season to the back alleys of Whitechapel, across the Channel, across the Pond, across the seas of Time…

How far will Senza Fyne go to avoid Death?

Three Questions With AJ Krafton, author of The Heartbeat Thief

What inspired the story of The Heartbeat Thief?

It started with a single scene, a conversation between a young woman and a mysterious stranger who steals up beside her at a funeral.

A lot of my stories start out like this, a single scene with no other context. It’s as if I happen across a conversation between strangers and only see one tiny snippet of their story. Sometimes, the scenes get written and tucked away in an “ideas” folder on my hard drive, lying dormant. Sometimes, a trickle of life stirs within, and a story grows out of that tiny seed.

Sometimes, the seed germinates and grows and blooms into a novel. That’s what happened with that first passage—it was the seed that grew into The Heartbeat Thief.

I went back to the oldest draft of the story and found that original seed. Here is the passage as I’d first written it:

That frightens you, doesn't?

She didn't turn to look at him. His presence was like a thick fog, tenuous yet flowing, something she felt along her skin. She didn't need to look at him—she knew right where he was. That sense of nearness, something she recognized even for all his strangeness.

She knew him. Didn't know why, or how. And she didn't care. It was simply what was.

She pinched her lips together, watching a woman bent in grief, clutching a handkerchief to her mouth. “Doesn't it frighten everyone? Dying--in such a sudden way—“

Ah, it's not the suddenness, or the surprise, or even the shock. It's the brick wall at the end of the road of life. You don't like the ending, no matter how it comes.

She tilted her head, just enough that she could capture him in her periphery. “No. I don't like the ending.”

He drifted closer, hovering just over her shoulder, like an umbrella. His mouth close to her ear, he chuckled a sonorous tone. Why would you? Your beauty, faded? Your charms, withered? Your friends and admirers, all gone away? You'll die alone, bienaimee. Everyone dies alone.

She tugged her shawl tighter about her shoulders. “Don't say that.”

But it is truth. Oh, if only there was a way to avoid all that.

“No one lives forever.”

Do they not?

His voice held such a curious tone, a tease in the words that caught her attention. “In the afterlife, yes.”

In this life.

She faced him, locking her gaze with his. His dark eyes glittered and a smile tugged at the corners of him mouth. “Why would you say things, here?”

Where better to admit the truth? He stole behind her, trailing his finger along her shoulders. In this place, life meets death. They stare each other in the face. The only difference between them is that the dead no longer care.

He drew back, his sudden withdrawal leaving a cold mist on her skin. The only question that remains is…do you still care, bienaimee?

She wrinkled her nose. “Of course, I still care.”

Then, he said, his voice deepening into a throaty chuckle. Don't die.

She turned to admonish him for his audacity but, when she spun around, he was gone.

No way could something like this stay dormant in a dusty old file. The stranger’s mystery and his shadowy threat and the promise of eternal life simply held me captive, and I knew it would haunt me until I wrote it.

That was where The Heartbeat Thief came to life.

Where did the characters get their names?

One character was named by a fan on Facebook, one name was inspired by a song, and one simply named himself.

Felicity Keating is a close friend of the main character, and was named in an impromptu contest I held on Facebook. I had a name for her but I felt like doing something spur-of-the-moment. I loved the suggestion of Felicity because it was so fitting for the character and what she symbolized. (The Facebook Friend who suggested the name is mentioned in the Acknowledgements section of the book.)

The main character is Miss Constance Fyne, who prefers her nickname “Senza”. Her given name, Constance, alludes to the word “constant”. The suffix con- means with. Senza is Italian for “without”.

Her last name Fyne is a play on fine, or fin: French for end.

Senza Fyne is a play on the Italian word senzafine, which means “endless”. Fitting name for a girl who seeks the secret to eternal youth.

I love the word senzafine. I learned it when I heard the Italian metal band Lacuna Coil sing their song of the same name. It’s my absolutely favorite LC song.

One line of the song, when translated into English, fits Senza perfectly: I’m standing still in this moment of pure madness…I don’t know if I wish for good or evil although perhaps sin will give me more…

Playing opposite to Senza is a tall, mysterious stranger who teases her with secretive smiles and suggestions of magic. From their first meeting, he calls her bien-aime, which is French for “beloved”. When she demands his name, he listens to the tolling of a nearby church bell before calling himself Mr. Knell.

But he has an older name. A much older name. And it will take Senza a very, very long time before she realizes just who he truly is.

The song “Senzafine” fits him, too. One particular verse fits Senza’s dark seducer perfectly. There is no life without me. There is no choice without me.

And Senza utterly believes him.

How did the work of Edgar Allan Poe inspire this story?

I’ve been a Poe fanatic from an early age. There is something about that tragic man that keeps me captivated: his unwavering stare into the depths of the shadows that filled his life, his penchant for beautiful, melodramatic language, his undying devotion to the people he’d loved and lost.

My favorite Poe spots are in Baltimore (where he’d once lived and is interred) and in Philadelphia (where one of his homes has now become part of the National Park Service [http://www.nps.gov/edal/index.htm]). It’s believed that his story “The Black Cat” was inspired by the basement of that house. (I have a black cat Webkinz that I would love to stick into a hole in the wall there but the husband says NO THAT’S VANDALISM AND JAIL and other husband-type warnings. Such a party pooper.)

A few years ago, I had the chance to visit the Rare Books department at the Philadelphia Free Library, where they had Poe’s work on display. I could have spent a week in there, with only a thin pane of glass between my hand and the pages touched by Poe’s very pen. The original manuscript of Rue Morgue was inches away from my face. I was in complete thrall. (The husband rolled his eyes and moved me along.)

While my short stories and poetry often pay a small tribute to him, this is the first full-length work that I’ve devoted to his style. I let all the wonderful macabre shadows creep in and take over while I was writing. The Heartbeat Thief also includes specific references to “The Masque of the Red Death”.

In “The Masque of the Red Death” a wealthy lord turns his home into a sealed fortress in an effort to protect himself and his close friends from the Red Death, a plague that was spreading through the country. One night he threw a party for his guests…but someone unexpected showed up. The unexpected guest was dressed as a ghoul bathed in blood and everyone fell dead at its feet. (The End.)

Elements of “Masque” are present throughout The Heartbeat Thief. Excerpts from Poe’s story are used in the section introductions, setting the tone of the chapters to follow. The novel’s structure was also loosely based upon the flow of Poe’s story—Prince Prospero's seven apartments now become the seven major settings of the story. I used color references and allegorical context to connect Senza's journey through time to the passage of Poe's ill-fated party goers, right the very last black room, where Death awaited them all.

Overall, I hope that the theme, the atmosphere, and the character’s obsession with life and death would do my idol proud. I hope to visit Baltimore again soon, just to stop into Westminster Burying Ground [http://www.eapoe.org/balt/poegrave.htm] for a moment to say hello, to offer another bit of thanks for his unending inspiration, and to leave a few pennies on his gravestone.

Excerpt & Giveaway! Sweet Ache, Driven #6 by K. Bromberg

The New York Times bestselling author of Slow Burn turns up the heat when a sexy bet turns into so much more....

Hawkin Play, the bad boy rock star with a good guy heart, has lived a lifetime of cleaning up after his twin brother’s mistakes. Hunter’s most recent screwup could land Hawke in jail and risk the band’s future. Hawke agrees to guest lecture at a local college to stay in the judge’s good graces—and a bet with his bandmate to seduce his sexy teaching assistant is icing on the cake.

Quinlan Westin is harder to bed than Hawke imagined. She knows his type and is determined to avoid the rocker at all costs—even if their attraction runs deeper than simple lust.

Just as Hawke might finally be winning over the girl, his brother has other plans. When Hunter realizes his twin finally has a weakness, he’ll stop at nothing to take advantage....

Quinlan

“Now you guys need to get going so you have time for Quin to give you the complete rundown,” Professor Stevens says.

Of course she has no idea the double entendre she’s just given Hawkin about me giving him a complete rundown, but I know Hawke catches it. I manage to resist the urge to stomp my feet in frustration and storm out of her office like a toddler. Instead I give her a tight smile before turning and walking out of the office and then the department.

I stand there in the sunshine, waiting for him to get his ass in gear and quit wasting my time. When I finally hear the door open I just start walking and the sound of his boots is the only inclination that he’s following.

“I’ve got longer legs than you Trixie,” he chides from a few feet back. “But feel free to keep swinging your hips like that, and I’ll stay right here behind you and enjoy the show.”

I bristle at the comment. At the moment there’s no authority to be respectful of, no damage that can’t be undone.

“A show?” The pitch of my voice escalates as I whirl around to face him—sunglasses on, hair disheveled, and I wish I hadn’t turned around because damn, he’s just that devastatingly fine. I’m quiet for a beat as we both appraise each other from behind darkened lenses. His dark hair, tanned skin, and cocky smirk pulls at those parts of me I don’t want to be pulled. “You want to talk about a show.” I grit the words out, trying to push my physical attraction to him from my mind. “Let’s talk about your little performance for Dr. Stevens.”

“I know. I’m good, huh? Sorry but a man’s got to do what he’s got to do . . . Besides, I wasn’t done with you yet.”

My mouth falls lax and I’m momentarily flabbergasted. “Done with me yet?” I sputter the words when I’ve recovered my wits at his arrogance run amuck . . . But I can’t deny the little flutter in my belly at his comment. There’s just something about him aside from the whole I’m a rock-star thing, that makes me desire him in a way I can’t put into words.

“Yep.” He says casually as he unwraps a Starburst and pops it into his mouth. And I hate that I’m fascinated with watching his mouth suck on the sweet candy. Luckily he speaks so I can distract myself from the captivating sight. “I’m pretty sure you have a usefulness . . . I’m just trying to figure out what that is.” He licks his lips. “Well, besides the obvious, that is . . .” Smirk is handily in place and I hate that ache starting to simmer in my core.

“Why don’t you go suck a—”

“Relax,” he says, angling his head to the side and emitting a laugh as he steps closer to me. “I’m just teasing you. You’re so damn easy to rile up and so hard to resist. Plus you’re even hotter when you’re pissed. I like it.” He shrugs an apology, hands shoved deep in the pockets of his jeans with a sheepish grin that softens all those hard edges and makes me sigh with the contrast of characteristics. He holds a red Starburst out to me as a peace offering. “C’mon, you know you want to be the star to my burst.”

We’ve stopped, my hands are on my hips, and the sun is falls around us as hewaits for me to react to his innocent little comment. Deep down I know I’m screwed. I feel an urge to smile but immediately realign my defenses. The contradiction he presents, the smooth with the rough, is the one thing that I always fall for when it comes to men.

And I’m not going to fall for Hawkin Play.

Review, Excerpt & Giveaway! Loving Jacob, Loving Jacob #1 by Lee Brazil

When Malcolm Jenner’s sex-on-the-side turns into more, he isn’t above begging for a second chance.

High profile attorney Malcolm Jenner is looking for a bit of fun, nothing serious. He's got duties and responsibilities, after all. Though he's not one to choose his lovers from the office, Jacob Renault is an attraction too compelling to resist.

However, Jacob isn't interested in temporary. He wants it all—Prince Charming, the castle, the happily ever after. There's no rule that says the younger man can't have fun while he's searching for his prince, though…

At first neither is willing to compromise on their stance, but an agreement is reached, with each man planning to do his best to subvert the other to his viewpoint. Lust turns to love, and what’s impossible becomes merely improbable, but is it going to be enough?

Malcolm stood in the hallway, gritting his teeth and reminded himself that an office fling with a man who had to be at least ten years his junior was out of the question. He and Penny had long since relinquished any pretense of monogamy in their marriage and reached an amicable agreement to conduct their affairs discreetly out of respect for their son and their friendship. Fucking purple-eyed twinks in the elevator at work? Not discreet.

He kept his gaze focused on the gleaming silver metal of the doors as the elevator made its excruciatingly slow way up to the third floor. His glance flicked to the reflection beside his. The younger man stood casually, shoulders propped against the wall, licking pink lips. His purple gaze in the hazy reflection was focused…fuck…on Malcolm's obvious erection beneath his dark dress pants. Discretion. Discretion, he snarled at his libido. There will be no casual hookups with people from the office, he warned his eager cock. He shifted to the side slightly, hoping to hide the evidence of his arousal from the other man. Damn it. That kid had the sexiest eyes he'd ever seen. He wanted like hell to see them glaze over as he fucked the tight ass hinted at by the khaki pants he wore. He didn't go much for the intimacy of face-to-face encounters, but for the sight of those eyes and that mouth in the throes of orgasm, he'd make an exception. His tendency toward quick casual encounters disguised his preference for male partners and kept word of his homosexuality from getting back to his parents, his partners in the firm, and out to the public.

A law office, like any other place of business, was a microcosm of the world at large. Malcolm knew from being on the receiving end of gossip from his secretary, Marge, that every action and interaction between employees was fodder for the gossip mill. Being the subject of water cooler gossip lacked appeal and offended his sense of dignity, as did the knowledge that he apparently couldn't control his urges around the tech guy.

He threw in the towel and gave up the fight against his attraction to the young man from the technology department when he caught that sultry purple gaze on his cock for what must have been the hundredth time as the slight young man brushed against him in an intentional teasing slide while he tried to exit the elevator on the second floor.

Impulsively, Malcolm grabbed Jacob's hand and pulled him back inside the otherwise-empty space. He kept that small, soft hand locked in his own as he allowed the heavy metal doors to slam shut and the elevator to rise to his own floor. There he slapped his palm against the button that prevented the doors from opening. He'd had all the titillation he could stand. Malcolm swept the young man into his embrace. He tilted Jacob's head upward with one hand and dropped his mouth passionately, almost brutally, to kiss the other man. His other hand tangled in the black curls that had taunted his senses over the past weeks. He forced the soft pink lips apart, then swept his tongue inside. Instantly he was absorbed in the heated, slick haven of Jacob's mouth. The honeyed sweetness drew him further in and his tongue eagerly sought the textures and flavors that had been hidden there. Fuck. He could drown in the wet heat he found behind those soft lips. It was addictive. Jacob didn't even try to escape the kiss; he seemed to be doing his best to encourage it. He brushed his tongue against Malcolm's, sweeping it gently along the roof of his mouth, seeking and finding the sweetest spots. Both men were panting heavily when their lips parted.

Malcolm pulled back and spoke harshly. "Is that what you're after, little boy? You want a quick fuck in the elevator to start the week off right?"

Loving Jacob is a story about love found and lost, about bad decisions and second chances.

Malcolm has always known he’s gay but it has been drilled into him that he has to marry, produce an heir and carry on the family name.

Which is exactly what he did but he’s never ignored the part of himself either.

Jacob wants it all – the prince charming, the 2.5 kids and the house with the white picket fence.

But, who says he can’t have a little fun while waiting for these things to happen?

That is exactly what Malcolm can offer him. A hot, no strings attached affair to benefit them both.

But, you know what they say about best laid plans. And, sometimes, love just isn’t enough.

I love this story. It was my first Lee Brazil book and I was pleasantly surprised.

The author managed to tell a story of a lifetime in a short novella without skipping any important details or rushing it.

The way the story was told is brilliant. The passage from present to past and the to present again so smooth, the readers will never feel like they missed something or that there was a part they didn’t quit understood.

Both Malcolm and Jacob are fascinating characters.

They’re strong, they face every challenge in life with determination and courage until it comes to their relationship.

They’re also smart, well adjusted people and have a great ability to love.

Their mistakes are not such as to be impossible to understand. In fact, I think a great deal of people could identify in one way or another with them.

Another great addiction to this story were the secondary characters. Every single one of them has a purpose and a role. The most important one is to stand behind the main characters and remind us about why we fell in love with them in the first place even when we think they’re not worth the trouble anymore.

This is especially true in Malcolm’s case.

In certain instances you’ll find it easier to hate him and it will be hard to understand his reasoning but, the way his family always stands behind him, proves that there’s still place for improvement.

This was their journey from meeting and falling in love to falling apart and together again.

I’m glad the author didn’t stopped here because, while it may seem the circle is complete my opinion is that there were important stages that were skipped in the relationship.

Don’t get this wrong, it’s not like there are missing parts in the story it’s just the way the characters rushed into everything not giving themselves enough time to actually know each other. This was one of the reasons why their relationship evolved the way it did.

Their story is definitely not complete.

I cannot wait to read Holidays with Jacob. It’s on my Kindle right now waiting for me.

Do I recommend this book? Yes. Definitely. It’s a must read in my opinion.

Lee, you just got yourself a new fan.

Happy Reading!!

Somewhere in a small town in up-state New York are a librarian and a second grade teacher to whom I owe my life. That might be a touch dramatic, but it's nevertheless one hundred percent true.

Because they taught me the joy of reading, of escaping into worlds crafted of words.

Have you ever been nine years old and sure of nothing so much as that you don't belong? Looked at the world from behind glasses, and wondered why you don't fit?

Someone hands you a book, and then you turn the page and see… There you are, running from Injun Joe in a dark graveyard; there you are fencing with Athos; there you are…beneath the deep blue sea- marveling at exotic creatures with Captain Nemo.

I found myself between the pages of books, and that is why I write now. It's why I taught English and literature for so many years, and it's why my house contains more pounds of books than furniture.

If I'd had my way, I'd have been a fencer…or a starship captain, or a lawyer, or a detective solving crimes. But instead, I am a writer, and I've come to realize that's the best thing in the world to be, because as a writer, I can be all those things and more.

If I hadn't learned to value the stories between the pages, who knows what would have happened? Certainly not college…teaching…or writing.

Release Day Blitz! Twisted Bond, Holly Woods Files #2 by Emma Hart

I’m an Italian-Texan woman in a family full of cops. I’m passionate and shoot before I think. You only f*ck with me if you’re stupid.

Photograph cheating spouses. Hand over the evidence. Cash my check.

That was my plan when I returned home to Holly Woods, Texas, and became a private investigator.

Finding the dead body in my dumpster? Yeah… Given the choice, I think I would have opted out of that little discovery, especially since all three of my brothers are cops. And my Italian grandmother is sure the reason I’m single is because of my job.

Of course, my connection to the victim is entirely coincidental. Until I’m hired by her husband to investigate her murder and shoved bang-smack into the path of Detective Drake Nash.

My nemesis, a persistent pain in my ass, and one hell of a sexy son of a bitch.

Shame he still holds a grudge from that time I shot him in the foot twelve years ago, or we could have something. In another life.

So now all I have to do is avoid my nonna’s blind dates, try not to blackmail my brothers into giving me confidential police files, and absolutely do not point my gun at Drake Nash. Or kiss him. Or jump his bones.

All while I hunt down the killer.

Sounds totally simple—until a second body proves that sometimes things that start as coincidences don’t always end up that way…

(Twisted Bond is book one of the Holly Woods Files series and while it does not end in a cliffhanger, it is not a standalone.)

“Can I get my purse before you manhandle me across town?”
His lips thin, but he releases me so I can grab it. No sooner have I locked my office door than he’s got my arm in his vice-like grip again and is dragging me down the stairs.
“Gee, thanks for the gesture, but I can escort myself out.”
“I have no problems coming up with an imaginary charge and arresting you for it.”
“Do you realize you’ve mentioned arresting me twice in as many days? Are you fantasizing about me in handcuffs, Detective? Because I’m all for a little kink, but those things hurt like a bitch.”
Drake swings me around and my butt bumps into his cruiser. “Yeah? And you’d know would you?”
“Actually, I would.” I smirk. “If you’re a cop dating a cop, it’s a given.”
Drake’s eyes change from angry to smoldering before I’ve finished my sentence, and he leans in. “Noelle, if the handcuffs hurt, then he didn’t fuck you properly.”
“Sounds like someone uses his cuffs off duty.”
He grabs the door handle, his fingers brushing the side of my ass, and I ignore the sharp breath my lungs are begging me for. “Get in the car, Bond.”
“And here I was thinking you were about to promise to show me how to use handcuffs properly in bed.”
He tugs on the door so I all but fall into him. I’m only steadied by the grip he still has on my arm, although it’s softened a little now.
“If I ever get desperate, I’ve got your number.”
He’s lucky he moves away, because I’m two seconds from jabbing my heel into his foot and giving him another scar to go with the bullet one I gave him twelve years ago.
“Good to know I need to change my number,” I mutter, settling into the car.

Julia Caldwell has long since mastered the art of seduction in order to catch the only thing on her radar; one night stands. Having two failed marriages under her belt, she’s learned to keep her feelings in check and remain aloof, not wanting to get caught up in another pesky relationship only for it to end eventually in heartache. As the manager of a prestigious Hair Salon in Nashville, she succeeds in keeping the opposite sex at arms-length except when it suits her and her needs. That is until she lands on Cottage Grove soil.

Dean Parker has just as many failed marriages against him, and with being a divorce lawyer it eventually has him thinking that’s why his conquests always fall through, due to his occupation. After seeing his two childhood friends rekindle their flame and earning the happily ever after he so desperately craves, he decides to give up. That it’s not worth the heartache he’s been put through. Until he meets the snarky spitfire who gets under his skin.

Throwing the two of them together in the same town for the wedding of their best friends, Julia isn’t against having another fling, even if it is with Dean, but he definitely has other plans of making it more than that. Amongst their non-defined affair, lurking somewhere in the darkness is a shadow from one of their pasts who will stop at nothing to make sure that happily ever after’s stay where they belong, in the fairy tales.

The auction finally ended and I looked up to find Dean jumping down from the stage and rapidly stalking in my direction. Instead of him being happy about me outbidding everyone and donating to an amazing cause, he had a murderous glare on his face.
“Oh shit,” I heard Baylor mutter.
Oh shit was right. I quickly rose from my seat and ran up to him to try and defuse the situation. What started out as a silly prank and the evidence of my jealousy, ended up hurting him and I had no one to blame but myself for putting that thunderous look on his face. My chest ached for believing I hurt him.
He continued storming forward until we were nose to nose and I had no other choice but to walk backwards to avoid being run over.
His steps didn’t falter until I was completely pressed flat up against the wall and his arms came up around me, boxing me in so I couldn’t move. He gave me no option other than accepting the brutal tongue lashing that was about to be bestowed upon me.
Dean’s chest was heaving up and down, his labored breathing matching my own, and his eyes were narrowed at me. “What the fuck kind of game are you getting at here?” He spat in my face through his clenched teeth. My heart was beating so fast in my chest that I swore he could hear it, hell, maybe even the entire room could hear it. I couldn’t form a coherent thought as my eyes flicked from his lips back up to his eyes. He didn’t skip a beat as he pushed his groin into me and it was clearly evident that this little encounter was turning him on. A loud moan managed to slip from my lips as his hard length pressed into my belly.
I hadn’t ever been a fan of voyeurism, but I was practically ready to beg him to lift up my dress and fuck me right there, audience be damned.
“Are you finished being a bitch and trying to ward me off?” He gently brushed his nose across mine, “I promise you it’ll be explosive.” His breath skimmed my ear and just as I thought he was about to dip his head down and press his lips to mine, he took a step back, turned on his heels and began walking away from me, seemingly unaffected.

Suddenly, another bellow filled the air, causing tiny bumps to rise on Ret’s forearms. He dumped the bowl and swiped an extra rock from the dirt, tossed it into his pouch and took off in the direction of Sophie’s wails.

As he raced along the river’s edge, Sophie launched another battle cry. If she was this upset, her cubs must be in danger. Ret broke into a full run, loading his sling as he followed the sound.

But when he reached the clearing, the cubs appeared safe, wrestling and rolling in the meadow as usual. Sophie, on the other hand, stood on her hind legs, knee deep in the river, with the rapids splashing up high on her furry form. Her cry of distress continued and Ret wondered if she’d been injured.

He slowed to a walk as he approached, clucking his tongue in a soothing manner. What had always worked in the past, however, didn’t seem to faze the mother bear. Once near enough, Ret assessed her from head to toe. No obvious wounds. She stood upright and strong, and bellowed again, filling the air with thick vibrations.

Ret’s gaze whipped along the raging river and a swatch of color caught his eye. Had someone fallen into the rapids? Ret knew the villagers opted not to enter the river this time of year claiming his sport of rapid riding to be a bit extreme. Yet, his gut—and Sophie—told him something wasn’t right.

He scanned the shoreline with Sophie’s desperate cries as a backdrop. On a nearby river rock, Ret saw a torn cloth clinging to the rock’s edge. His eyes darted from one rock to another while searching the foamy islands.

He saw her hand first. Laying casually on top of a boulder as if she’d simply stopped for a rest while swimming. Her body, wedged between the boulder and mass of sharp stones, lifted and dipped as the water passed over and under her form.

Like the rushing of the water before him, adrenaline cut through Ret’s veins. He thrust himself, waist deep, into the freezing water. Before he could even wonder what had brought Wolf into these dangerous rapids, the current yanked at his body. He carved a trail to the high boulder, the roar of the river drowning out Sophie’s wails.

The torrent labored to hamper his progress, but Ret pushed back. Would the ferocious waters dislodge Wolf, sending her downriver before he could reach her? His mind reeled with calculations—percentage of submerged mass in relation to the speed of the current—as if he could determine the number of remaining moments before she launched. She bobbed on the water’s surface, and Ret swallowed back lumpy fear. He reached out and lunged, catching her around the waist. Relief lasted a short moment, as Ret rolled her over to face the sky.

Her skin was ashen grey.

Ret looked back at the shore. Could he maneuver her back in time? He couldn’t risk losing a precious second. Instead, he hefted her limp body fully onto the boulder that had served as her temporary refuge. After crawling to her side, he placed a finger on her carotid artery, and a wave of relief exploded through him. He felt a feathery pulse—but she wasn’t breathing.

With a supportive hand beneath her skull, he pulled down on her chin, rolled her head back, and opened her mouth. Without hesitation, he performed as he had been taught. He covered her lips with his own, pinched her nose and sent a strong breath into her lungs. He watched her chest. No movement. He repeated the process.

No rise. No fall. He pinched off her nose, covered her mouth with his own and released another breath before sitting back on his heels.

“Come on, Rebel. Breathe!”

Character Interview with “Doc”

“We are greatly honored to have the creator of the city of Impervious with us today, Dr. Benjamin Leiben. Welcome, Doctor Leiben!”

“Thank you for inviting me. I’m happy to be here. And, please, call me, Doc.” Doc sits into the chair across from me at the interview table. “Do you have any tea?”

“Of course!” I slide a previously brewed cup across the table. “I thought you might enjoy this mango-ginger blend.”

Doc sips from the cup and nods his head. “Very good.”

“So, word around town is that you personally designed the underground city of Impervious. Can you tell us more about that?”

Doc laughs. “Well, yes. The idea was actually birthed with my four buddies from college. On a lark of sorts. The idea of building a luxurious self-contained bunker, that is.” Doc pushes his cup away, places his elbow onto the table and rests chin on fists. “You see, we were really just a group of science geeks, enamored with apocalyptic scenarios.”

“So, when did idea turn to action, then?”

“Oh, when the threat of a true apocalypse began to surface, I suppose. That’s when Marcus sought us out. He was the financier, so to speak.”

“But then things turned?”

“Well, yes.” Doc stands and begins to pace the interview room.

“Something snapped inside of Marcus. Maybe it was always there.” Doc shakes his head. “I don’t know.”

“But you superseded his desire to control, huh?”

“Yes, yes. My lovely bride, Ema and myself. We birthed…” Doc laughs at his choice of words, “quite literally, I would say, we birthed a better plan.”

 “Retter?” I ask.

 “Retter.” He agrees.

Something in his voice chills me… like I had just stepped onto holy ground. Shaken, I excuse myself and slip out of the room.

I’m a book-writing, selfie-taking, latte-drinking, social media gal. I’m living a good life on the road as a full-fledged Bedouin (Well, except, my tent is actually a fully-equipped RV.) Me and my partner-in-crime (Benj) tend to hunker down wherever the skies are clear and the temps stay in the 70’s. We call ourselves Gypsy Nerds because we aimlessly wander the U.S. with glasses perched upon our noses and faces jammed into computer screens (for the first half the day... The second half of the day is typically devoted to playing because we’re also somewhat immature.)

Like most authors, the characters I create are my extended family. And like most readers, when the story ends, I get a little sad. In real life, I have two handsome, hardworking, grown-up boys who know how to make their Mama proud! *Waves to Joey and Mike!*

The Ascension Series is my debut into the world of YA fiction.

I’m living what I love and loving what I live!
