Excerpt & Review! Don't Judge, Nothing Special #4 by A.E. Via

Cover by Jay Aheer

Detective Austin Michaels didn’t think life could get any better after he was accepted into the most notorious narcotics task force on the East Coast, headed up by two of the baddest’ Lieutenants with the Atlanta Police Department - Cashel Godfrey and Leonidis Day.

Michaels knew he would fit right in as the team’s sniper, having received his fair share of commendations for marksmanship. He was just as badass as the rest of the twenty brothers that made up their team. But when Michaels lets their prime suspect get away from a huge bust with over a quarter of a million dollars in drugs, he’s willing to do whatever it takes to make it right.

Left with no other options, God chooses to bring in outside help, calling on his long-time friend and bounty hunter, Judge Josephson.

Judge was considered one of the best trackers during his enlistment in the United States Marine Corps. After retiring, he used those skills to become one of the most sought out fugitive trackers in the country. When Judge gets a call from his old friend needing his help, he quickly tells God, yes.

Still embarrassed, and intent to prove himself, Michaels immediately volunteers to partner up with Judge to get their suspect back quickly and quietly. Neither man wanted or needed a partner. But, after Judge and Michaels get on the road, the hate/lust relationship they quickly develop between them will either make them heroes… Or get them killed.

Judge carefully scanned each document that was relevant to tracking someone. He could care less about what laws the man had broken, it wasn’t his job to determine if he needed arresting or if he as guilty. His job was to bring him in. “I take it you want this guy alive.” That comment got him a lot of stares.

“If you don’t mind.” Day said between clinched teeth.

Judge looked around. “You do understand this guy is a murderer. You think he’s gonna roll out a welcome mat for me.”

He watched God rear back in his seat and run his hands through his long hair. “I know that, Judge. Just try. I’m not telling you to get yourself killed. But if you don’t have to take a kill shot, I’d appreciate it.”

“I make no promises.”

“Of course not.” Day said drily. “you just make sure to bring my sniper back alive and you won’t have any beef out of me.”

Judge snapped back up, pulling his cane out of his mouth. “Excuse me.”

God grimaced and glared at Day. “I hadn’t exactly told him yet.” He whispered but Judge heard him loud and clear.

“Told me what, God?” Judge stood. “And it better not be what I think it is.”

“Judge. I need this guy in custody and I need it done quietly. So I want one of my guys to go with -”

“Hell no.” Judge backed up. “I don’t need any help you know that.”

“He’s not gonna be there to help you, he’s there to keep things quiet.”

“You think I need a goddamn do-gooder-baby-sitter, telling me how to do my fuckin’ job?”

“You know damn well I’m not saying that. I need assurance that this will keep kept quiet and I also know you wouldn’t be bothered with giving me updates.

Judge scoffed. “Quiet. You think I haven’t heard of these two.” He pointed to the two men that were introduced as Ruxs and Green. Now that he had a face to go with the names he knew who to point to. “These guys are the epitome of loud noise and ruckus.”

“Because that’s their job.”

“Fuck no.” Judge growled.

“You owe me, goddamnit!” God stood and came around the table to square off with him. Bookem stood and growled but didn’t attack. He’d never do that without command. God ignored the warning and stood directly in front of him. “Now, I’m asking for my favor. Are you going to refuse me, Judge?”

Son of a -. Judge gritted his teeth. God knew he’d never go back on his word. God gave him a few minutes to stew in his anger. All eyes were on him, waiting. Reluctantly he asked, “Who is he?”

“Detective Austin Michaels.” God replied. His voice and demeanor looked as if he was proud to present this guy.

Judge rolled his eyes when he saw Detective Michaels stand up. Of course it had to be him. The sexiest one of them all. Shit. When the man came over to glare at him, Judge had to be sure not to show his surprise or amusement. The little fucker. Actually he wasn’t so little. He was tall and built. Compact muscles over smooth ivory skin. No doubt he was as macho and straight as an arrow, those kinds usually were. Judge was eager to see how the man handled himself.

Well, damn! Who would’ve thought that Michaels would turn out to be such a hottie?

Seriously now, he was kind of annoying in Here Comes Trouble.

Austin has been working with God and Day for a few years now and he’s changed a lot. He’s trusted and respected by everyone and has become an important part of the team but, something is still missing in his life.

A botched intervention brings him on the path of Judge, one of the best bounty hunters and God’s friend.

At a first glance, they seem to have nothing in common but, time and them hunting for their suspect together, will give them time to think and see everything from a new perspective.

Just like every other book in this series, I loved it. Adrienne sure knows how to write and I always read with pleasure her stories.

It was a little bit difficult to connect with Austin and Judge but I’m not blaming that on the writing or the story itself. I think the reason was them being completely new characters.

Like I said before, I thought about Austin as being a little bit annoying in the previous installment so, the complete change he went through, was a little bit overwhelming. Not in a bad way. I would have liked to know more about him, though. There wasn’t much there about his past, his life before joining God and Day.

It doesn’t take anything from the story but, him being a new character and all that, I think a little bit more info would have been welcome.

As always, there were some really, REALLY hot scenes. Phew! *fans self* A lot of action, humor (because Day, duh) and I even shed a few tears at one point (again, damn you, Day) and, guys, you’re in for a BIG surprise. *GRINS*

Totally worth it, I promise! Now, I really hope Adrienne will write Curtis and Gen’s story at some point. Don’t you agree? I NEED to know what are they up to and how has their relationship evolved.

And, yes, see Green and Ruxs deal with the fact that their son is having a significant other in his life. That should be interesting.

All in all, it was a great book and I highly recommend it. Just keep in mind that this is a series and you should start from the beginning.

Happy Reading!!

Excerpt & Giveaway! Bent Not Broken (Cedar Creek, #1) by Julia Goda

Life has taught Ivey Jones early on that with trust come pain and betrayal. Out of survival she has created walls around her to keep anyone from getting too close. Though she lives in her dream house in the Rocky Mountains and loves being the owner of the town's quirky little bookstore Serendipity, her life is narrow and governed by strict rules that she never deviates from…until Cal Bennett enters her life.

For the past nine years Calvin “Cal” Bennett has stayed away from Ivey, thinking she deserved better than to be saddled with a single dad who has never been good at relationships. Until a few chance encounters show him what he’s been missing and he can’t stay away any longer.

Little does he know he’s got a fight on his hands that he might not be equipped to win. Shadows from Ivey's past lurk in the dark, ready to strike and bring her low once and for all. But Cal swears he will do whatever it takes to break through that wall of steel to win Ivey’s heart and keep her safe.

Strength.
Was does that mean really?
Does it mean you can keep standing after someone punches you in the face? Does it mean you don’t make a sound when he kicks you in the gut when you can't keep standing? Does it mean you hold on to hope though you know there is none?
Or does it mean you leave it all behind, you give up and run and never, ever again open yourself up to anything that can hurt you?
If only I knew.
I have tried door one, two, and three.
But no more.
If that is strength, then I want to be weak. Weak is better. Weak is good. Weak is going to make all the pain and bruises disappear. It cannot fix what is broken inside, but at least nobody can see that.
On the outside I will look like any other twenty-eight year old woman. Nobody can see what’s hiding inside.
What they left me.
What I will never be able to get rid of.
What is now a part of me.
Hidden by the mask of being normal. Of being content. Hidden behind smiles and chatter and maybe even a laugh. But all that is empty.
The way I see it empty is better.
Empty is good.
Just like weak.
Because it cannot hurt you.
It cannot take from you.
And that’s good, because I have nothing else to give.
Everything else has been taken from me, so empty is all I have left.
And I am content with that.
Now, maybe if I keep telling myself that, I’ll eventually believe it too.

I have been writing stories in my head since I can remember. Much to my teachers’ dismay, given the task of writing a short essay I would always come back with way too long and detailed stories. Many discussions (I have always been somewhat of a smart-aleck) and bad grades were the result, so that for most of my life I thought I couldn’t write worth a damn and pursued other careers. But the dream of being an author wouldn’t be ignored and kept lingering. With a little help from my fantastic husband, who gave me the necessary kick in the behind, I was finally brave enough to start writing my first novel and finished it only a few short weeks later—well, the first draft, that is. The seal was broken.
My novels jump genres and touch on all kinds of different topics, but the things I try to focus on no matter what are romance, strong women, and a good sense of humor.
Now, when I’m not in my writing cave, spinning the tales that have been hounding me or editing (yes, I am also a professional editor, guess that degree in Literature and Linguistics turned out to be useful after all!), I enjoy reading, drinking coffee, eating good food, and listening to rock music.

Release Day Blitz - Excerpt & Giveaway! Love Drunk, Second Chances #3 by Libby Rice

LoveDrunk-1200x1800

The love that lies built? Wine importer London Whitley dots her I’s and crosses her T’s. Her meticulous nature insulates her from fears that she might just be crazy, as in certifiably, medically nuts. When her almost ex-boyfriend winds up dead at her hands and she’s soon accused of importing counterfeit wines, London’s carefully constructed world begins to crumble. There’s help to be had, but only in the form of an imposing stranger who threatens her ruin. Trevor Rathlen is lucky to have escaped his marriage to a murderess alive and merely indebted to men who think the exquisite London Whitley’s innocence is a façade. A computer security specialist by day and hacker by night, Trevor agrees to return the favor owed by learning London’s secrets. The task should be an easy one, except Trevor is short on trust, London is long on lies, and together they battle an infinite attraction.

Secrets and strategies swirled in London’s head, mixing with a need that had begun to pulse between them the moment his mouth had overtaken hers in the warehouse. The two of them played with a fire that flared hot, but unstable. London should play the game of Trevor safe. She should keep her cravings buried and hand over what she knew about her flailing company, including its most problematic ex-employee. If she did, Trevor would immediately learn about the nature of her ex’s death. The move would resolve his suspicion professionally—a good outcome because he’d be out of her hair with the least amount of hassle—but also push him away personally. A not-so-good outcome. Maybe an intolerable, unacceptable, unspeakable outcome. The idea of revealing facts certain to repel the intense and complex man overhead made her stomach pitch and roll, a warning that for the first time her body had ideas, too. A prickle beneath the skin, a warmth between the thighs—both said London didn’t want to be staid or level anymore. You’re on a bed. Barely dressed. His hands are on you. Keep them there. Because she knew she would lose him sooner or lose him later. The question had become: How much of Trevor Rathlen could London have before he became a casualty of her gravest mistake? ****** “Trevor.” His name sliced through the charged silence. In that way London had of saying a lot with a little, her tone struck him as subtly, meaningfully, different than her earlier apologies and then her desperate pleas for help in the warehouse. This time it contained a request. Her reclining position let the hospital gown fall against her skin, skimming over the bountiful curves that had blown his imagination all through her shower earlier in the night. By then he’d known she would be all right. With the scare over, her biggest problem would be lingering headaches and dehydration, which had left plenty of bandwidth for him to be jealous of the attending nurse. He’d cracked down on how badly he’d wanted into that sterile little bathroom because no way was he lusting after a woman in need of a crash course on the nobility of truth. Unfortunately, his lofty, better-than-thou ideals hadn’t tempered the urge to distract the nurse with lies about buzzers and sirens in the hall so he could sneak in and go down on London in the shower. Only sturdy locks had kept his ass squarely on the couch. Now her eyes held a dark invitation instead of her customary uncertainty. It seemed London didn’t trust him enough to tell him what she was hiding, but she did trust him enough to touch him. To let him touch her. Maybe his friend had had the right idea about women—sex for secrets—all along. London, sleepy-eyed and relieved, looked perfectly willing to be plied. Trevor shifted away and rolled his head back. When he spoke, he did it to the ceiling. “I know that look.” The London he knew would reply with another apology, an instant and visceral retreat from her tiny step toward what she wanted. Except she didn’t. “Really?” London whispered. “What does it mean?” Anticipation thickened their mutual stillness, and his cock. No matter how badly he wanted them to, the overhead tiles didn’t get any more interesting upon increased inspection. Barren and white within a metal framework, they practically dared him to turn back to what mattered in the room. To temptation. To madness. When he risked another glance, London hadn’t budged. Green eyes met his stare evenly, as though their battle of wills, her injuries, the counterfeiting, even the remaining mysteries they both knew she guarded, all belonged somewhere far from her bed. Freshly scrubbed, London smelled of soap and lotion. Moonlight gleamed against a natural glow that had replaced her earlier pallor. Black curls tumbled across her pillow in artful tangles. Fresh and unkempt, she looked impossible but real, a magazine spread that wasn’t. He leaned in, caging her torso with spread arms. If she wouldn’t guard herself, Trevor didn’t have the strength to do it for her. “That look is a demand.” “For?” “Me.” Beneath him, her chest expanded on a slow, deep inhale. “And, London?” he said. “Unlike you, I won’t renege once I decide to give you’re asking for.”

“Granny?” I asked, as I slowly began to walk back over to her. I did this while silently hoping that Doctor Kyle had been wrong all along and that my beloved relative could hear me. I reasoned that all the reading I had been doing with her had brought her back to me. I let out a cry of joy as I wrapped my arms around her neck and sobbed into her chest, but my moment of happiness was short lived when suddenly, Granny’s hand reached up and twisted my necklace squeezing it so tightly it felt like a superhuman skeleton was attacking me. I couldn’t breathe as I felt a powerful pull on my neck.

The pendant!

I tried to pull away from her grip on the necklace but my airway had become constricted. Fighting the superhuman strength that the old woman now possessed, I fought back but I could feel the chain searing into my flesh and I began choking.

I couldn’t breathe.

The chain to my necklace was digging deep into my skin and the pendant was in Granny’s hand. She kept the pressure on as I continued to struggle for air.

“Let go,” I begged through gasps of breath, “Please!”

I could see black dots now clouding my vision as the world around me grew darker. I looked down at Granny’s eyes which were now wide open and filled with a manic intensity. She seethed emotionally, “He’s gotten to you, just like he got to your mother.” She growled as her hand continued to tighten around the necklace.

With my last ounce of strength still left in me, I yanked myself away from her and collapsed onto the wooden floor, clutching my neck and desperately sucking in air. Coughing and trying to regain my composure.

I glanced up to see Chrissy hovering over Granny’s bed. Looking at me curiously, she chastised, “What in the hell did you do to her?”

Armen Jettison possesses a human soul. No big deal, right? Except for one thing, Armen is a sex demon, and demons should be soulless. Centuries of fighting his inner evil have left him tired and starved for some naughty action. When his leader offers him a mission to Anchorage, Alaska, to rescue a female threatened by his enemy, he jumps on the next flight. In an Anchorage tavern, he finds insecure, cynical Ariella Segreti. Not only is she the threatened woman he seeks but his Soul Tie, the only woman able to tame his unruly demon. Well, he did crave some naughty action. Now, he has a mate, a mysterious child, perilous old enemies, and enough adventure to send them all running for their lives. When the danger finally catches up to him, Armen must put aside old loyalties, forge new ones, and tackle the most difficult challenge of his existence—winning his stubborn Soul Tie’s heart.

Never had such lust consumed him. He was an Incubus, a demon created for sex and seduction. Damn, his shaft rose hard and strong, rigid enough drive nails into concrete. Pressure built to where he feared he’d come in his pants. His kind had the ability to withhold release for hours, pleasuring with the utmost control. Yet, at this moment, he wouldn’t last one more step without spilling his seed all over the inside of his boxers. His eyes snapped up, and his impulses flared. An eruption of snarls rolled from his chest, exploding over his lips.

Mine, his demonic-self snarled.

Armen had no choice but to agree.

After a quick scan of the perimeter, Armen marched across the street. Locked and focused, his eyes narrowed with desire and an unrelenting need to find what belonged to him. Claim her and protect her with his life. Her scent latched to his insides like a dozen sharp steel hooks, dragging him toward her as if some demented puppet on a string, distorting his control, making him appear more animal than human. People gawked, most likely taken back by his feral features. He stalked past them without care, a man on an obvious mission.

Armen slipped into the dark alcove several feet from the bar’s entrance. He needed to remain hidden while he gained control over his desires. Had this been a few hundred years ago, the villagers would have thought he was possessed and run him out of town waving pitch forks, but times had changed. Now, they probably figured he was a junkie needing a fix. Their assumptions fairly close as far as he was concerned. He craved something all right, and what he longed for sat somewhere within those walls.

The demon in him roared, pacing, demanding he take her. His heart cried to hold her. He hadn’t laid eyes on her, yet he knew without a doubt she belonged to him.
