Or will the beast scare her off for good?
Jase and I were ten years old, I remember this because my mother had thrown us a small birthday party the day before. Sitting at the kitchen table, we were bored and restless. Not having much of a social life, our mother did her best to keep us out of sight. Very rarely allowed to go outside, we were even home-schooled. We knew from the little information we received that we were to fear our father, although our young minds didn't really understand this. Since we had so far evaded him, there wasn't really anything to instill fear into us. Despite the fact that we had been told we had two older brothers, and the need to be separated making it easier for us to escape if need be, didn't really add to our fears.
Our mother was ironing in the lounge, not able to see us where we were seated. Jase nudged me, pointing towards the back door. Always out to prove he is the braver twin, I go along, not wanting to look weak. Jase eases the door open, and I pass by him out into the garden. Not content with remaining in the garden, Jase glances towards the woods behind it. Finding a gap in the fence, we crawl through. I admit I was scared, having been so small at the time. Surrounded by towering trees with very little light breaking through, Jase decides hide and seek would be our game. I remember being scared as Jase disappeared into the trees, seeking a hiding place while I was left with the countdown.
Shadows surrounded me as the trees swayed in the breeze, and I hear a rustling in the trees. Thinking it is Jase trying to scare me, I spin around. Instead of Jase, I find a huge man walking towards me. Frozen in place, he stands before me, towering over me. Bending
down so we are eye level, I am startled by his resemblance to Jase. He smiles at me and remarks, “Hey, Megan, aren't you a pretty little girl?”
I don't recall ever seeing him before, but relax since he knows my name. I remember thinking that maybe he could be one of my older brothers. Not having heard much about them, and considering his resemblance to Jase, it was a possibility.
He reaches his hand towards me, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear. He turns as Jase comes crashing into the clearing, skidding to a halt as the man stands to full height.
“Ah, Jase, I see you share my good looks. Maybe I will take you along after all,” the man says. Fear rises inside of me, the mention of taking us is not sitting too well with me.
“Who are you?” Jase demands. Always the braver one of us. The man looks amused by Jase, who is using his scowling face. The one he uses when trying to look intimidating.
“I am your father,” he announces. All of my mother’s warnings come to the surface, this is the man we have been running from. The one who has my mother terrified of letting us out of her sight, and he is here standing in front of us. He lifts his chin up as though he is sniffing the air, a satisfied smile covering his face. Jase runs to my side, and gripping my wrist, he tugs me backwards away from the man.
