Book Blitz: Excerpt & Giveaway! Bricks by John Davidson

Sixteen-year old Cori Reigns learns that not all tornadoes take you to magical places. Some take your house, your school, and life as you knew it. Struggling to put the pieces of her life back together, Cori learns to rebuild what the storm destroyed by trusting family she didn't know she had and helping friends she never appreciated.

In the eerie glow from the lantern, I sat in a ball with Slim’s long arms wrapped around me. Only our synchronized breathing and the drum of my heartbeat disturbed the silence.

The pizza boy screamed as the TV flew upward. We ducked, and it slammed into the locked steel door. A roar like a jet-powered locomotive swept over us. Wind raged through a crack in the rattling door like the screech and cackle of a tempest-tossed witch, fluttering the lantern’s light. Slim caught the set as it dropped. The cord flopped at my feet, severed like it’d been bitten by a wild animal.

Mr. Hawkins mumbled. Mrs. Lassiter spoke to Jesus. The Mangino’s driver sat near me, his rocking horse motion powered by gentle sobs. I forced my hand to stop shaking long enough to reach around Slim and squeeze the boy’s hand in mine. Mrs. Lassiter always said there are no atheists in foxholes. There are no strangers either.

My heart passed the next few minutes of external silence by banging like a sledgehammer against my ribcage. Finally, Mrs. Lassiter slid past us. “Would you mind giving me a hand, young man?”

She had to be talking to Slim. The Mangino’s guy was still a sobbing mess.

“You okay?” he asked me.

I think I nodded.

At the top of the steps, the metal latch clanged. Then a grunt and a shard of light.

The sounds repeated.

“I can’t get it open,” Slim said. “It must be jammed.”

My sledgehammer heart banged louder.

“Not jammed,” Mrs. Lassiter told him. “Blocked.”

And louder.

Crazy thoughts and images raced through my mind. The tiny enclosure seemed to have suddenly shrunk by half. I couldn’t take it any longer. Being trapped in a tiny underground bunker that smelled of perspiration and pepperoni made me want to puke. I squeezed the pizza guy’s hand a final time and pushed to the top of the steps to wedge myself between Slim and Mrs. Lassiter. No one objected. It wouldn’t have mattered.

I didn’t wait for three. I threw my shoulder into the metal door, and it slowly creaked upward—six inches, a foot. With both feet on the steps and our shoulders against the door, we pressed upward to provide more leverage.

“A little more,” Mrs. Lassiter said. “There.” She extended the metal bar to hold the door open. My shoulders relaxed as the brace clicked into place. I rubbed my arm and stepped into the eerie gray light.

Review! Ten Below Zero by Whitney Barbetti

“In here,” he said, pushing on the skin above my heart, “you're ten below zero. And you’re closer to death than I am.”

My name is Parker. My body is marked with scars from an attack I don’t remember. I don’t want to remember. I choose to live my life by observation, not through experience. While people are laughing and kissing and connecting, I’m in the corner. Watching them live. I’m indifferent to everything, everyone. The only emotion I feel with any kind of depth is annoyance, and I feel it often.

A text message sent to the wrong number proves to be my undoing.

His name is Everett, but I call him rude. He’s pushy, he’s arrogant, he crowds my personal space, and worst of all: he makes me feel.

He chooses to wear all black, all the time, as if he’s waiting to attend a funeral. Probably because he is.

Everett is dying. And he’s spending his final days living, truly living. In doing so, he’s forcing me to feel, to heal. To come face to face with the demons I suppressed in my memory.

He hurts me, he fulfills me, he completes me. And still, he's dying.

My Review ...
This is a beautiful story about friendship and love, about learning how to accept yourself for who and what you are.

A message sent to the wrong number. This is how Parker and Everett’s story begins.

Two sad, lost, scarred soul who try to cope with what fate has handed them as best as they can. In each other, they find the perfect friend. That one person who sees you exactly how you are, who understands you better than you understand yourself and pushes you to reach out for the future.

Since the night she had her face slashed open, Parker, has kept everyone at arm’s length. She doesn’t have friends, she doesn’t go out, she doesn’t even smile. Nothing. She just shut down.

Everett has the days counted and he just wants to LIVE. He wants to enjoy every second he might have left. Then he meets Parker. Beautiful, scarred, unfeeling Parker and he makes it his last mission in life to make her feel again.

Their story is sad, heartbreaking and, at the same time, beautiful.

Two complete strangers on a journey that can only have one possible ending.

I was caught up in the story from the beginning and it was so easy to connect with the characters. This is the kind of book that makes you feel so much more than you would have thought possible.

Whitney writes beautifully and not even for one second will you be tempted to put the book down because it’s starting to get boring.

I particularly liked how she focused on the characters, on their lives, their feelings, on the connection between them and not on their looks, wealth or lack thereof. There aren’t many secondary characters either which, in my opinion, is a good thing. It allows the reader to focus on the story without constantly trying to remember who was who. Those existing side characters have well defined roles throughout the book only helping in better understanding certain aspects of it.

I don’t know what else to say. You have to read this book. My only regret is postponing it for so long. It’s great. I recommend.

Happy Reading!

Her mundane life is set into a free fall of tragedy and terror. Her husband maybe out of her life, but he left a storm of collateral damage behind and the burden is on Lily to sort it out.

Fate connects Lily with Gavin Edwards, a charmingly handsome British gentleman that has been drawn into her tangled circumstance. Gavin is everything Lily’s husband wasn’t and gives her hope that love really does exist. Gavin wants nothing more than to sweep Lily up and carry her off into the sunset, far away from the devastation left behind by her husband. Gavin has been the first breath of fresh air in her life, but she isn’t looking to be saved. She needs to clean up her husband’s mess and find a way to save herself in the process.

Does she throw caution to the wind and open her heart? Or listen to her head that tells her and go it alone until she’s found herself again?

My house is a crime scene, I’m completely alone, and I can’t call a single friend. I’m so mad at Ashton I want to scream, but I’d have to yell pretty damn loud for him to hear me now. My head drops into my hands, and I rub my temples hoping to fight off my growing migraine. After a few minutes, I feel someone sit next to me. I fan my fingers and look up to see Gavin’s hypnotic eyes. I get lost in them for what feels like eternity.

Gavin takes my hands away from my face and gently wipes the tears away. Then he wraps his long, muscular arms around my shoulders, and I allow myself to lean into him. This man, whom I’ve known for about twelve hours, whose wife was killed by my husband, is the only person in the world I have left.

Review! Falling Into You, Falling #1 by Jasinda Wilder

Purchase de Falling Into You Single HERE

I wasn't always in love with Colton Calloway; I was in love with his younger brother, Kyle, first. Kyle was my first one true love, my first in every way.

Then, one stormy August night, he died, and the person I was died with him.

Colton didn't teach me how to live. He didn't heal the pain. He didn't make it okay. He taught me how to hurt, how to not be okay, and, eventually, how to let go.

My Review...
“This book is for everyone who has ever lost a loved one, for everyone who has woken up crying and gone to bed the same way, for everyone who has had to learn that it's okay to be not okay. Surviving isn't strength, it's continuing to breathe one day at a time; strength is learning to live despite the pain.”

This is how Falling Into You begins. It's the second time I read it and the second time I try to write a decent review. A little bit difficult to do that when my emotions are all over the place and I'm overwhelmed with sadness. This is a sad story. About love, death, loss and pain. About learning how to let go before it's too late.

Nell Hawthorne and Kyle Calloway have grown up together and found it easy to turn the friendship into something more later on. Young and in love, life has just began for them and they were planning to enjoy every second of it. But one dark night, Kyle will be thorn away from Nell to be forever out of her reach.

How do you live when your other half is gone? How do you go on without the person who was your soul mate, the love of your life?

Kyle's death will change her life forever. Ridden with guilt, she shuts off every emotion. No tears, no mourning. Complete emotional shut down.

She doesn't want to grieve because she thinks that, by doing so, she'll let go of Kyle, she'll forget him and she can't allow it.

Colton Calloway has left home at the age of seventeen with nothing more than the clothes he was wearing and never looked back. Now he's back for his little brother's funeral.

He knows Nell but they've never spent any time together with him being older and then leaving. Now, he sees the pain in her eyes and there's nothing he can do to help her. Nothing except being there. The fact that he feels something every time she's near and every time he touches her makes him feel guilty but he can't help himself.

Their ways part after the funeral and won't reconnect until two years later and only by chance.

Nell is still messed up. Even more than before. Instead of letting go of her grief, she's mutilating herself and using pain to block everything out.

I really liked Colton. He's been thru so much and dealt with a lot of crap but he survived and learned how to cope, while Nell is so pathetically weak. At one point I realised she started using the pain caused by Kyle's death as an excuse for her actions. Colton's determination to help her and his patience are admirable. Their relationship evolves gradually and they even start to perform together but tragedy strikes again and another death will throw them back into that pit of despair. Only this time, they have each other and maybe they'll find a way to be okay and not give in to the pain and return to old habits.

What this story reminded me of was that life is short. Love, live and hold your dear ones close. Never let a day go by without telling them how much you love them because you never know what life brings and you may never have that chance again.

And never let pain consume you. Be angry, cry , grieve, hurt but let go. Holding the pain inside won't bring the one we lost back. Nothing will. And using physical pain to forget about the hurt in your soul is never a solution. In the end it will destroy you.

Never be afraid to remember. The good times, the bad times, the laughter and the tears. Remember everything and be grateful for the moments you had together, for having known them and been a part of their lives. Life is to precious and too short to let pain stop you from living it.

Hug your loved ones tight and treasure those precious moments when you cand hear their heart beat and feel the warmth of their skin under your fingers. And remember. Remember everything …

That song at the end of the audiobook? It broke my heart and I love it! Great job, Jasinda!

Happy Reading!

Abby stood nervously before her Master in the classic submissive pose: fully nude, legs apart, wrists placed behind her back; deeply ashamed of her evident arousal. Worse, she had to recount in exact detail the proceedings of her last whipping. The whipping had been severe; as was the case with most of the clients she was commissioned to serve. These client appointments were scheduled a few weeks apart, in order that the welts, bruises and whatever other marks were left behind had ample time to heal. After all, each new client - whether male, female, a couple, or even a group - surely deserved a fresh canvas upon which to begin. Despite these harsh sessions, her body reacted like that of a wanton whore as she retold of the sadistic punishments and extreme sexual use inflicted upon her body.

How far would her Master push her with these ‘tests’? How far would Abigail go? How many times could she stand before him blushing; yet with that unmistakable tingle? Their relationship was surely headed for a collision course. Or was it? This story contains STRONG BDSM. While fully consensual, it includes submission, dominance, sadism and masochism. Please do NOT buy or read this if you are offended by graphic sexual descriptions including sexual violence. All characters are aged 25+, and it is recommended for an adult audience ONLY (aged 21+). This story is pure fiction and the author does not condone any violent behavior.

Warning: This is neither a conventional romance nor a traditional love story. There are no hearts and flowers on the pages of this book. The heroine doesn’t always make wise choices and though I’ve tried to make her strong, she’s often times weak in the face of the fierce hero. The hero is not a knight in a shining armor. He’s broken and frequently cruel, and what every woman in the real world should avoid. What’s contained in this book isn’t real - it’s fiction; dark, depraved and decadent make-believe. Contains detailed sexual encounters, profanity, uncomfortable situation, and erotic elements including voyeurism, oral and anal. INTENDED FOR READERS 18+.

Obsession, possession, resilience, insanity— Seeking solitude and reprieve from her past failed relationships, Elsa begins her life anew in Richmond, hoping to find the change that she so desperately needs. Things are looking up for her, a new job, new friends— a fresh start. But Victor has different plans for her. From the moment he heard her voice and set his eyes on Elsa, she became next on his to-do list; his Chapter 8. A well-known and respected criminal profiler, his mind is as dark as the people he hunts down. It takes one to know one, after all. Under the guise of making his subjects stronger, he intends to break Elsa down using everything in his arsenal, including pleasure, pain, humiliation, and things unspeakable. Everyone is fair game in his book and he discriminates against no one when he chooses his test subjects. Lonely, still on the mend from a bad break-up and longing for sexual attention, Elsa consents to an odd proposition, unaware of Victor’s plans. However, she can’t be broken so easily and what he puts her through only fuels the fire burning within her, a flame that begins to blaze out of control as she becomes obsessed with everything about Victor and peeling back his cruel layers in search of the real man hiding beneath his heartless facade. In Victor’s world, there is no such thing as happily ever after and Chapter 8 proves to be an infuriating challenger when she flips the tables on his selfish and twisted game, a game they both may end up losing their hearts and minds over.

Series Spotlight (Interview and Giveaway)! My Master's Nightmare Season 1 by Marita A. Hansen

Episodes 1 to 5 - Amazon
Episodes 6 to 10 - Amazon
Episodes 11 to 15 - Amazon

Like a television series, My Masters’ Nightmare is broken up into seasons and episodes. There are fifteen episodes per season.

Warning: This series is a soap opera and has M/M and M/F non-con and dub-con. It is very dark and violent, so if this isn't for you, don't read it.

My Review ...

Fair warning – this is all Dark. There’s no romance, no flowers and hearts and rainbows.

I don’t even know where to begin.

As the title sais, what starts as a police operation to dismantle a human trafficking network turns into anyone’s worst nughtmare.

Rita Kovak never imagined that being chosen for this particular assignment will change her life forever.

She wants to avenge her husband’s murder and what better way to do it than taking down those responsible?

But what if everything she believed was a well constructed lie?

Rita will find herself in a world more messed up than even a tough girl like her can handle as the story revolves around the war between two Italian mafia families.

To be honest, I have no clue how to describe this series.

The writing style is great, Marita did a really good job. There are twists and turns you’ll never see coming and you’ll realize that nothing is what it seems. Some of the characters you hated in the beginning, you’ll change your mind about them in the end. No, you won’t love them because there’s nothing for you to love in My Master’s Nightmare but you’ll be so captivated by the story that you won’t be able to give up reading. It has been like that for me.

I recommend it but it will mess you up.

Happy Reading!

Author Interview ...

Hi, Marita! Welcome to Mikky’s World Of Books. Thank you for agreeing to this interview.

·         Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I was born in New Zealand, where I’ve lived for most of my life. Though, I’m full Croatian, just with a New Zealand accent :)

I’ve always been interested in writing, but started off as an artist. I worked as a graphic designer and a fine artist. I also went to university, getting a Bachelors of Arts in Art History and Italian, and a post graduate Bachelors of Arts (Honours) in Art History.

In my thirties I started writing fiction. I originally wrote a YA fantasy story, but dropped it for a New Zealand series based around a rough neighbourhood where I used to live. The first book went to the top of two writers’ websites, getting reviews from Harper Collins and Orion. I published it as Behind the Hood (Behind the Lives #1). Its sequels are Behind the Tears and Behind the Lens, along with a prequel called Graffiti Heaven.

However, I needed to make a living from my writing and since New Zealand social realism fiction isn’t a well known genre; I decided to write something that I hoped sold better so I could continue writing. That’s where My Masters’ Nightmare comes in.

·         How did you come up with the idea for My Masters’ Nightmare?

I saw how the kidnapping genre was popular. However, I didn’t like the weak and whiny women I saw in some of them, so I decided to write a story about a strong woman. And since I liked reading Italian mafia stories when I was younger, especially Mario Puzo’s works, I decided to make the main character an FBI agent who goes after the Italian mafia. Also, I thought I could finally use my Italian degree.

Anyway, I’m getting off the topic. I saw another author writing serials, and since I like writing books in a television format, I decided to break My Masters’ Nightmare up into episodes. Though, that ended up being an exhausting task when I stupidly said I would publish 15 episodes for Season 1. I’m a bit rash and will blurt things out, then regret it later. It also made it even harder when I started hating writing the story. Because of it, I almost quit after Episode 5, especially since the story became much darker and crazier than I’d intended. It’s one thing to read a harsh story like this and another to write it. Plus, I had to write very fast to get each episode out in time, which exhausted me. But ... a group of ladies from Goodreads talked me out of quitting. They offered to beta read since the editing cost was breaking my bank account. So, I ended up completing the fifteen episodes.

And since I decided not to have a second season, I rounded everything off in the finale, putting in an epilogue so readers knew what happened after the climatic scene. However, I didn’t feel that the epilogue was enough, so I’ve decided to write a book detailing the full story of what happened in Russia. That book is due out this year and is called One Night with Jagger. It’ll be classified as My Masters’ Nightmare #16, The Five Families #2, and will also be linked to The Santini Brothers series.

·         What can we expect next? Is the story over for these characters?

You will see all the characters again as they are moving to two guaranteed series and one possible series: The first two are: The Santini Brothers (about Alessandro’s family) and The Five Families (A group of novels and novellas about the five main mafia families from the island). The possible series is Frano & Rita. If that series happens, it will be set in America, and detail Frano and Rita’s problems with the mafia there as well as the FBI.

·         Can you tell us something about your new project?

The Santini Brothers series follows another mafia family. In My Masters’ Nightmare you got the D’Angelo’s story. The D’Angelos were human traffickers. The Santini in comparison are gun runners as well as having their hand in other legal and illegal enterprises. So, unlike My Masters’ Nightmare you won’t get full blown erotica - unless you go near Alessandro, lol. Anyway, the Santini Brothers is a mix of romance, action, thriller, and family drama. The Santini clan is the biggest on the island. There are numerous brothers and two sisters. Each brother will get a book, the first being Ricardo (the Don). The second book is about Brando, the hitman of the family.

The other book series linked to My Masters’ Nightmare, The Five Families, also has its first book out. It’s called I Love You, Salvatore and is about another Santini brother and the love of his life.

·         Do you identify with any of your characters? Is there something of you in them?

No. There are no characters in My Masters’ Nightmare that I identify with. However, there is one character in another series I do identify with, but I would never admit who it is :) But I will admit to one other character who has one of my bad habits - Maia from Behind the Hood. Like her, I smile when I’m in trouble, which gets me into even more trouble.

·         What advice would you give to all the aspiring authors out there?

Don’t take all criticism to heart. Not everyone will like your writing. Take encouragement from the ones who do.

·         Thank you, again, for sharing your thoughts with us, Marita. It was a pleasure to talk to you.

You’re welcome.
