Book Promo and Giveaway! But Now I See by Lulu Astor

Genre: Adult, Dark Romance

They were continually at cross purposes—

“She understood one thing with every bone in her body: he could do anything, get anything done; it was terrifying how much competence, influence, and power he had.”

He realized that “Sweet little Ali had the jagged talons of a vulture, capable of ripping out a man’s heart in one fell swoop… and at this point in time, he was that man; it was his heart.”

But Now I See, the concluding sequel to My Heart to Fear by Lulu Astor, is a book about forgiveness and redemption. The question is whether forgiveness and redemption are even possible when so near to the gates of hell?

It seems we’ve been here before.
Lulu Astor is… do you really want to know? I mean, really? Wouldn’t you be more interested in other fictional characters created by Lulu? Seriously, they’re all younger and way better looking. How about meeting and spending time with the young, beautiful Olivia and the smokin’ hot Daniel from Complements, the sweet, pretty Gen and devastatingly handsome Derek from Between Us, and the gorgeous duo Ella and Ian Blackmon from Three and a Half Weeks?
All are available on Kindle, Smashwords, and Nook. All are infinitely more interesting than Lulu—and all will go to bed with you a lot quicker, too.

I’m a born and bred native New York City girl, however. Older than 20, younger than 80, I’ve been a writer all my life, a copy editor, proofreader, professional student, and even dabbled in the corporate world for a few minutes. I plan to spend the rest of my life writing and hopefully traveling a bit more. I absolutely adore my readers—they’re the smartest and have the best taste of all.

Book Blitz: Excerpt and Giveaway! The Last order by Angela M. Caldwell

Amazon

Lana forms a secret order of women knights to fulfill her father’s final request: find the queen who was thought to be dead and return her to the throne.

Lana Crewe is a strong, fiercely driven seventeen year old living in a village ruled by fear. With their king and queen both dead, strife and division have taken hold. Ruthlessly attacked by an Order called Talons, Lana’s father is fatally stabbed. Before he dies, he imparts upon Lana a directive to save the statue of Saint Peter, and tells her that the queen yet lives. Now it is up to Lana to unravel the mystery of Saint Peter and bring an end to all of the war by finding the queen.

A medieval tale of hope and mystery, The Last Order is an action-packed story with one of the strongest female leads since Disney’s “Brave.” Not your average YA novel; The Last Order takes upper teenage angst and spins it on its head. You’ll be gripping this book as hard as it will be gripping you.

Chapter One:

LANA RUBBED HER ARMS, still shivering under layers of clothing.

You should have worn your cloak, her father’s voice warned, mixing within her thoughts. After years of his lectures and training, he had become a part of her—one that she assumed would eventually go away, or at least quiet down a bit.

Under the short skirt layered over her leather pants, Lana retrieved her dagger from its custom pocket. Leaves rustled behind her and she spun around, ready for her opponent.

"One day, I will catch you off guard," Bowen said, twisting his lips.

"You’re late," she teased.

"What’s the wager, Lana?" he asked, holding up his sparring sword, ready to fight.

"You’ll mend my sword without payment."

"And if I win, you’ll run double errands," he answered. She swung her sword and lunged at him. "Deal."

Their swords sliced back and forth, making for an almost equal bout. Bowen stood taller than her by a few inches and weighed double. She glided around him with ease. He turned, whipping his blade around expertly. Sweat already beaded on his face. Lana’s heart pumped and her blood warmed. She jabbed her blade. Bowen swerved unsteadily, almost escaping her weapon, but her final swing landed perfectly along his ribcage. Bowen stumbled sideways and fell to the ground, his playful expression turning bitter.

Lana bowed her head. A smile began to creep along her face as she raised her eyes back up to meet his.

"Next time, I will finish you more quickly," she tried to joke, attempting to ease her conscience.

Bowen held his side and cringed. "You’ll do anything to win," he said.

Lana offered her hand, but he refused. "I’m done," Bowen said as he stood up and walked away from her.

"Done? What?" Lana balked. "Bowen, wait." Lana dashed around in front of him and pushed her hand out against his chest. He stopped, seeming unsettled by her touch. His eyes turned sour and far from amused. "We’ve always been a team," she pressed him.

"I don’t have time to play knight with you anymore," he argued, but didn’t try to push past her.

"Oh, too good are you?" she teased again. Seeing no change, she got serious. "I suppose it’s your mother?"

"Who else is going to mend your sword and everyone else’s? Father’s ill. You know that."

She stared into his eyes, begging. "You’re the only one left who can still keep up. Who will train with me?"

"There’s more to life than fighting, Lana. You need a skill," he said.

"I have a skill." Defending herself was an invaluable skill that few women possessed.

"One that matters, like… I don’t know." Bowen seemed to blush a bit.

She cut him off. "Cooking? Sewing? A skill more fit for a woman, so that your mother would approve of me?" His eyes agreed with her words and the realization sliced at Lana’s heart. She thought Bowen would stand by her, but he had stopped dreaming. She stepped out of his way.

What do you say now, Father? she thought. You won, but not over your anger. She kicked the ground and gritted her teeth. Walking away, she struggled to listen over her footsteps, wishing that Bowen would chase after her and beg her to forgive him for his lapse in judgment. Instead, stillness affirmed her fear. He had deserted her.

My mind has become consumed with anger, bitterness and resentment. With my mother gone, pieces of my past have been lost forever. I'd always assumed that my mother would eventually tell me the truth – when she was ready. But now that she is gone, I don’t know how to cope with the fact that I will never truly understand who I am.

Justin doesn’t understand. I don’t think he ever really understood why it was so important for me to get answers. I should have known better than to try to talk to him about what I was feeling. I wish I could rid myself of these terrible thoughts and haunting dreams. But I can’t and I'm spiraling out of control. I feel myself slipping away from reality and from those around me. I'm keeping everyone at a distance. I'm terrified to let anyone see the person I’ve become. But in doing so, I'm alienating every person who was ever close to me and feel more alone than ever.

WARNING: This is a STANDALONE non-traditional M/F/M ROMANCE with a non-traditional ending.

I walk quietly over to the door and press my ear against it to listen. I can hear the clicking of a computer keyboard, then the rolling wheels of a chair. Finally soft footsteps as he pads towards the doors. I back away, afraid of being caught. But he doesn’t slide them open. Instead, the lights flick off and then his footsteps retreat. I hear the crack of a beer bottle being opened, and then a sigh.

I slide the doors apart, just enough to peek inside.

There’s a large monitor on the desk sitting on front of a wall of windows. And on the screen are the images he took of me this morning. Of JD and me. And of the three of us out on the terrace. They flip by, hundreds of them, at least. Maybe thousands. I look over at the couch where he’s sitting with a beer propped up on his leg, staring at me.

“You can look at them if you come in here to do it.”

I don’t know how he wants me to respond, so I’m unsure if I want to look at them or run back to JD’s room and hide.

“I’m sorry about that,” Ark says, clearing his throat. “It’s just… JD stopped thinking about her, ya know? It took him so fucking long to stop thinking about her. And now here you are with a clue. And…”

I step into the room.

“And he’s gonna go looking for shit again, I just know it.”

I take another step towards him and Ark pats the space on the couch next to him. “I love these pictures. Come look at them with me.”

I take two more steps, and then I’m within arm’s reach and he slips his hand in mine.

My body shivers from his touch, but I let him pull me the rest of the way, and take a seat as he lets go. My butt is barely perched on the cushion, my hands in my lap, my body on high alert in case he wants to hurt me.

But he doesn’t. He surprises me by scooting away, propping his back against the armrest, and stretching out his legs behind me. They are long and in the way, so now I can’t lean back.

He takes a swig from his beer. “I saw you this morning. God, has it only been one day?” I know what he means. It feels like I’ve been in their house forever. “And answers were the last thing on my mind, Blue. I mean, fuck. I’d given up, just like JD. I gave up a while back, actually. Just accepted that this was the way things were. The way my life was gonna go. But fuck.”

I don’t know what any of that means, but I take that it’s not good by the way he finishes the beer and then throws it across the room, where it lands cleanly in an open-top trash can near the desk. “Get me another one, will you?”

I look down at him and squint.

He stares back. His eyes are bleary, and red, and now that I look closely, tired. Not tired like he needs sleep. But tired in a way I can relate to. The kind of tired where your body feels heavy and your mind feels empty. “Never mind,” he says in a soft voice that I’ve never heard before. He says it, but he doesn’t stop staring.

“What?” I ask, getting uncomfortable.

“Why’d you come in here?”

“I was…” I was looking for my money so I could leave. But this guy. These guys… they are pulling me towards them somehow. JD and his charm. Ark and his distance. And despite the fact that they take advantage of girls for a living, they feel very… vulnerable. It feels precarious. Like the whole thing might come crashing down at any moment. Like they are held together by some invisible thread. And not some mental connection or shared experience, either. Although I have no doubt they have all that too.

Held together by a thread that’s invisible because it’s nearly gone.

We are alike, then. Aren’t we?

Three people brought together by the early-morning rain.

Two of us clinging together, trying to stick it out. Ride the wave until it crashes, and then help each other up to start all over again.

One of us already dead. Still walking, but not living. Waiting to be saved. Or maybe wanting to be the one who does the saving.

Alaina finally opened the door to acknowledge the policeman. She prepared herself mentally for the drill she’d perfected with Officer Padgett, but was surprised as he removed his cap, to see a much younger officer. In fact, this man was gorgeous. Had she taken a better look earlier, she might have hurried her Gigi off the phone sooner.

“Officer—” She eyed his nametag: N. Heath Stanton and wondered why he chose to conceal his first name. “—Stanton, how may I help you?” She registered bold sea-green eyes that regarded her with either intense interest or curiosity. She couldn’t decide which. Alaina also noted with a mental fist pump, the absence of a wedding ring.

He was about a foot taller than her five foot four-inch frame, sans the ambitious heels she wore. While not rock-star thin, she thought she spied sinewy muscle definition under his uniform blues. A shock of haphazard dark brown hair no longer hidden by the cap adorned his head.

“I’m Officer Heath Stanton, TPD. I’m looking for the director of the center.” He lacked the southern drawl she expected, his sexy voice more of a mid-western twang. He couldn’t be more than a few years older than her twenty-three, but his demeanor was all business at the moment.

“That would be me. Alaina Parker.” She offered a hand and they shared a firm shake.

The touch of his skin made her face grow warm. She crossed her arms over her chest and narrowed her eyes. A visit from a police officer other than Padgett, their liaison, could only mean one thing. “What? Do I have another delinquent in TPD’s custody?” she asked.

”No, ma’am. I just wanted to come by and introduce myself. Captain Harrison assigned me to cover the property and surrounding community as the new liaison. Officer Padgett was reassigned.”

Alaina’s expression exhibited mild surprise. Her complaints had finally been taken seriously. She stepped aside and motioned for him to come in.

“Thanks, ma’am.”

“Unless protocol requires such decorum, please, call me Alaina. My grandmother is the only woman in my family who answers to Ma’am.” Alaina shook her head and grinned wider, shifting her weight onto one hip.

Officer Stanton loosened up a bit. “I’ll call you Alaina if you’ll call me Heath.”

His sun-kissed skin made him look almost angelic as he stood there, now giving her the once-over as well. All she knew is he had all the goods to replace that nameless, faceless dream man who seduced her in her sleep on a regular basis the past few weeks.

“All right, Heath and Alaina it is when the children aren’t around. If they learned our given names our authority would be thoroughly undermined.”

“We wouldn’t want that.”

“You have no idea how happy I am to see Officer Padgett replaced.” She lowered her voice in a conspiratorial fashion even though they were the only two people in the room. “That man was beyond non-responsive.”

“Since this is now my assignment, you can be sure I’ll be responsive.” Her candor may have been off-putting, as she noted an inflection in his tone.

Alaina was pleased her directness hadn’t rattled him—much. Something in his bearing clued her in that he could be former military. Although she was not usually attracted to uniforms like many of her girlfriends, she found herself drawn to Officer Stanton’s brooding good looks.
