Book Promo: Excerpt & Giveaway! School of Deaths by Christopher Mannino

Thrust into a world of men, can a timid girl find bravery as the first female Death?

Thirteen-year-old Suzie Sarnio always believed the Grim Reaper was a fairy tale image of a skeleton with a scythe. Now, forced to enter the College of Deaths, she finds herself training to bring souls from the Living World to the Hereafter. The task is demanding enough, but as the only female in the all-male College, she quickly becomes a target. Attacked by both classmates and strangers, Suzie is alone in a world where even her teachers want her to fail.

Scythes hungry for souls, Deaths who subjugate a race of mysterious magicians, and echoes of an ancient war with Dragons.

As her year progresses, Suzie suspects her presence isn't an accident. She uncovers a plot to overthrow the World of Deaths. Now she must also discover the reason she's been brought there: the first female Death in a million years.

She wanted to scream but no sound came. She wanted to run, but her legs wouldn’t move. The hooded man grinned.

Suzie’s heart pounded as she opened her eyes. Laughter echoed in the back of her head. The terrible laughter she heard every night. She wiped the sweat from her face, pushing aside the sheets. Sunlight spilled into her room from between frilly curtains. Mom would be knocking on the door to wake her soon.

She turned to one side as the dream started to fade. Every night the same nightmare. Every night she heard the laughter. The hooded man with a scythe. The feeling of complete terror.

What did it mean?

Above her clock radio, a worn teddy bear stared at her with its single eye. She pulled the bear to her chest and clutched it with her bony fingers.

Suzie Sarnio. The hooded man had written her name down. He always wrote it right before the laughter began. The man looked like Death. But why would Death have a stammer?

“Suzie,” said Mom, knocking on the door. “Come on, you’ll be late for school.”

“I’m coming.”

Suzie changed, staring at the mirror in her pink-wallpapered room. Each rib stuck out from her chest; she counted all twenty-four. The skin on her face stretched tightly over her skeletal face, and dark patches surrounded each of her gray eyes. As much as she tried to comb it, her long black hair tangled into stringy knots. Her arms hung from her shoulders like twigs, and her legs looked too weak to hold her up. In the past few months, she had lost nearly half of her weight. She glanced at an old picture, taken last year, on the first day of seventh grade. A chubby, pigtailed girl with freckles smiled back at her from the photo. Her braces gleamed in the sun, only a month before their removal. Suzie sighed. She opened the door, looking for a moment at her room. She didn’t want to start another year of school. Slowly, she turned around.

“Hey, squirt, watch out,” said Joe.

“Sorry.” Joe was a pest and a bully, but he was her big brother, and Suzie supposed she loved him.

“Get your skinny butt out of the way already. We’ve got a run before school.”

“Today’s the first day—”

“After last year, coach says we have to practice early.”

Suzie stepped aside, watching the bulky frame of her brother lumber downstairs.

“Later.” He winked at Suzie. “Have fun at school.” He ran out the front door, slamming it behind him, while Suzie went to the kitchen and sat down.

“I’ve made you a special breakfast,” said her mother, carrying a plate and a glass of orange juice.

“Let me guess, something big.”

Release Day Review! Overruled, The Legal Briefs #1 by Emma Chase

Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled Series, returns with the first installment of the Legal Briefs Series.

As a DC defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don’t call him the Jury Charmer for nothing – with his southern drawl, disarming smile and captivating green eyes – he’s a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him.

Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan.

Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart and mother of his beloved ten-year old daughter. Jenny is getting married — to someone who isn’t him.

That's definitely not part of the plan.
***
Sofia Santos is a city raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn’t have time for relationships or distractions.

But when Stanton, her "friend with mind-blowing benefits" begs for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him – to The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Mississippi – to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves.

Her head tells her she's crazy...and her heart says something else entirely.
***
What happens when you mix a one stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage and a gun-toting Nana?

The Bourbon flows, passions rise and even the best laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.

Fans of Tangled, you better prepare yourselves because you’re in for one hell of a ride in Emma’s new series, The Legal Briefs.

Defense attorney Stanton Shaw has struggled hard to have the position he occupies. He’s made sacrifices and lost important events in his daughter’s life but now he can afford to offer her anything she likes.

His relationship with Jenny has been complicated ever since he left for college and it’s about to become even more so because she has news he never expected to hear.

Sofia has been taught to always fight for what she wants. She strong, determined and she knows what she wants and how to get it.

Her “relationship” with Stanton is easy and convenient and it suits both of them, and the chemistry between the two is off the charts. They sure know how to raise the temperature in a room. Phew!

Neither is looking for something serious and what they have is devoid of any kind of complications.

Or so they think because, all of a sudden, things become all kinds of complicated and awkward when Sofia gives in and agrees to accompany Stanton to Mississippi.

Moment of honesty here – after reading the Tied series I was so afraid I won’t like Overruled, that it won’t raise up to the challenge. Boy, was I wrong. I’ve been laughing my head off from beginning to end.

This book has everything you can think of- funny, charming, strong and sexy characters, insanely hilarious situations, passion, romance, just the right amount of drama to keep things interesting and, did I mention the hot guys? No? Why, yes, there’s a lot of eye candy for your imagination ladies.

I am so glad I gave this book a chance and I cannot wait to get my hands on Sustained.

Mrs. Chase, I stand in awe. Brilliant!

Happy Reading!!

Book Promo! Getting Lucky Number Seven by Cindi Madsen

What's your lucky number?

Lyla Wilder is done being the shy, chemistry nerd extraordinaire. While every other college student is out having fun, Lyla is studying. With her cat. Well, she's played it "safe" quite enough, thank you. So she creates a "College Bucket List"―with item #7 being a night of uninhibited, mind-blowing sex...

But she needs some help from her man-whore best friend.

Hockey player Beck Davenport thought Lyla's transformation would be subtle. Man, was he wrong. With every item she ticks off, Beck finds himself growing seriously hot for his sweet, brainiac best friend. And if he's not careful, he'll end up risking their friendship in order to convince Lyla that he might just be her lucky #7....

The music grew even louder as we stepped inside, and the buzz of simultaneous conversations mixed in. People crowded the center of the space, dancing to the beat. Pairs, large groups, smaller groups, the wallflowers—they were all here, spread throughout the room.

“Lyla?”

I pulled my attention off the gyrating bodies and turned to Beck, who was gesturing me in the other direction. My ankle wobbled slightly, and I inwardly cursed the heels. Careful of where I stepped, I followed Beck’s familiar hat through the crowd. There was a large table in the corner covered in alcohol.

“Hang tight. We’ll start with something that tastes better and will get you buzzed fast, and then we’ll work up to the keg stand.”

The smile, combined with the hand on my back and a whiff of his cologne sent a flutter through my stomach.

What the what? First the strange reaction in the car, then thinking about his eyes and his scruff, and now I’m getting butterflies? Don’t go doing that to me, body.

“Sounds good.” Clearly, my senses were in overdrive or something. As I watched Beck move over to the table, I tried to think if he’d ever touched me so often before.

No, because we’re usually sitting on his couch eating ice cream and watching movies. And before that we mostly studied. But he usually opens doors for me when we go places. Maybe I’d just always worn too many clothes to notice his hand on my back. Either way, I knew better than to get flutters over Beck Davenport. The guy had longer relationships with cereal boxes than girls, and I wouldn’t even be on his radar in that area, looking for only temporary fun or not. We were just two chemistry nerds who’d built a friendship out of our mutual love of effortless hangouts involving movies and food—he was a closet nerd, whereas I let my love of science hang out there for the world to see.

But not tonight.

“Hey,” a guy near me said, and I looked to my right and then my left. There wasn’t anyone else super close by, and the few who were near us were involved in other conversations.

“Me?” I asked, still not quite trusting he was talking to me.

One corner of his mouth kicked up. “Yeah, you. I’m CJ. I saw you across the room and had to come and say hi.”

“Oh. Thanks. Cool. Lyla. That’s my name.”

He seemed to be waiting for something else, and I kicked myself for not looking up good party conversation starters. Finding it hard to meet his steady gaze, I glanced down and noticed some gray and white cat hair on my shirt. I wiped at it. “Sorry. My cat, Einstein, always sheds. Not that I’m a crazy cat lady or anything. I’ve just got the one. I mean, I had two when I was in junior high, but they both died. Not at the same time, or that would’ve been awful. It was still pretty sad. But now I have Einstein, and he’s super mellow, not to mention, like, the cutest cat ever.”

CJ nodded awkwardly, and I knew I should’ve stuck with keeping my mouth shut. After another weird beat where he just blinked at me, he walked away. Beck was standing off to the side, two red plastic cups in hand.

“Dead cats? You said you had a hard time talking to guys, but shit, Debbie Downer, I had no idea.”

My spirits sagged, taking my confidence along with them.

“Don’t worry.” Beck held out a cup to me. “The good thing about parties is there’s always another opportunity waiting around the corner. But let’s get you loosened up a bit before we try again.”

Release Day Blitz: Excerpt & Giveaway! Endless Nights, Vegas Nights #2 by Karen Erickson

The sex is crazy good. Is it crazier to want something more?

Vegas Nights, Book 2

Andrea and her two best friends have shed their nurses scrubs for a long-awaited weekend in Las Vegas, and nothing—flight delays, lost luggage, or the slightly weird guy with the sketchy invite to an exclusive bash—is going to stop their fun.

Within minutes of arriving at the opulent party, she’s deep in conversation with gorgeous, funny Luke Nelson, wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks. For some crazy reason, he can’t seem to keep his eyes—or hands—off her.

Luke isn’t looking for a hookup, he just wants to relax…until he gets one look at the classy brunette in the barely-there dress. One minute they’re talking, the next they’re all over each other in a dark corner. It’s like he’s an addict and she’s the fix he’s been searching for all his life.

One night of hot sex isn’t nearly enough. But after a weekend spent never more than a few inches apart, the time is quickly approaching when they’ll have to make a long-distance relationship work—or break it off.

“Andrea.”

She whirled around...and there he was. Tall. Broad. Casually dressed in a navy blue T-shirt and jeans, a smile on his face, his dark eyes sparkling. Oh, he looked amazing. She could hardly believe he was standing there in front of her.

“Hi.” She hiked her purse strap over her shoulder, clinging to it like a lifeline. What should she do? What should she say? Did she have permission to throw herself at him like a lovesick girlfriend or was she supposed to act cool and composed?

“Come here.” He grabbed hold of her arm and pulled her into him, giving her a lingering kiss. Then another one. His lips were warm and damp and when he pulled away, releasing her slowly, he looked about as dazed as she felt. “We need to get the fuck out of here, and quick. You have luggage to pick up?”

She shook her head, stepping aside to display her suitcase. “This is all I brought.” Why did they need to leave so quickly? She didn’t understand.

His smile grew and he rubbed his hand along the back of his neck. “Then let’s go.”

Luke took her suitcase for her despite her protests, grabbing her hand with his free one as he escorted her out of the airport. He kept his head slightly bent, as if he didn’t want people to recognize him, and she followed his lead, glancing around as discreetly as possible to see if anyone recognized him.

If they did, they gave him his privacy, and she was thankful for it. He seemed extra determined to leave unnoticed, practically dragging her outside toward a giant parking structure. They took an elevator up five floors, the interior of it freezing cold, and he slung his arm around her shoulder and held her close, his mouth at her forehead as he whispered to her.

“I missed you.”

She rested her hand on his stomach, noting the way the muscles tensed up at her light touch. “I missed you too,” she admitted. Damn it. She’d promised herself she wouldn’t make any sort of confession like that and there she went, not even five minutes into the visit.

“You hungry?”

“No.”

“Thirsty?” He pulled away from her when the elevator came to a stop, his hand falling to her lower back as he escorted her out into the garage.

“Um, no.” What was up with the weird questions?

“Good. We’ll go straight to my place then.” The look he shot her was full of heat, his gaze running over her quickly, and she shivered as if he’d actually touched her. “You are a sight for sore eyes, I hope you know.”

That saying had never made much sense to her, but that didn’t matter at the moment because he’d missed her. Looked at her as if he wanted to gobble her up, which she was a big fan of because the man had a very talented mouth. And hands.

Hands that could catch footballs, sure, but they were also magic hands that had her trembling and falling apart rather quickly...

“Here’s my truck.” He stopped at a gleaming brand-new blue Toyota pickup and unlocked the doors with a keyless remote, going to the passenger side to open the door for her. She hopped into the truck with his assistance, turning to look at him and say thank you, but he cut her off with his lips, kissing her so fiercely she had no choice but to lean back against the seat.

She grabbed hold of the back of his neck, her mouth opening to his, letting his tongue slide inside. A groan escaped her and she tunneled her fingers into his soft hair, gasping when his big warm hand maneuvered beneath her shirt and settled on her stomach.

“We keep this up, I’ll be fucking you in the parking garage—I don’t give a damn who sees us,” he said when he finally tore his lips from hers.

Exhaling a shuddery breath, she released her hold on him. That sounded perfect, which was totally crazy. She couldn’t allow him to do any such thing to her in a public parking garage. “Take me to your place,” she murmured, making him smile.

“Will do, baby.” He shut the door and rounded the back of the truck, opening his door so he could slip her suitcase on the bench seat behind them before he hopped into the driver’s seat. “I can’t believe you’re here.”

She smiled. “I can’t believe it either.”

“I’m glad, though.” His deep voice washed over her, making her shiver, and she watched as he settled his big hand on her knee and gave it a squeeze. “Fucking ecstatic, if you want me to be honest.”

Andrea laughed, loving his honesty. Probably way too much. “Me too.”
