Book Promo! Montana Hearts: Sweet Talkin' Cowboy by Darlene Panzera

Darlene Panzera continues her heartwarming Western series with a roughed-up cowboy, the feisty girl next door, and the deal that brings them together

If it wasn’t for an injury to his leg, Luke Collins would be riding rodeo broncos all day, every day. Until he heals, he’s determined to help his family’s guest ranch bring in money any way he can. But when a cranky neighbor gets in the way of his goal, Luke turns to the only person he knows can help: the gorgeous, rodeo-barrel-racing spitfire next door.

It’s no secret: Sammy Jo’s father is a pain in the neck. But if anyone can persuade him, it’s her. So when Luke asks for help, Sammy Jo is more than willing to make a deal with the handsome cowboy. The cost? He’s gotta get back up on that horse—with Sammy Jo’s help, of course.

As teamwork reveals a deeper connection, Luke finds himself falling for the beautiful girl next door. But to win her heart? He’ll just have to do whatever it takes.

~*~
A loud scuffle sounded from within the cabin, followed by a thud, as if something had bumped against the interior wall. Luke Collins stopped his trek down the dirt path in front to listen and wondered who or what was inside. The two unfinished cabins at the end of the row on his family's guest ranch were supposed to be empty.

He glanced down at his two-and-a-half-year-old niece and tightened his hold on her small hand.

"Onkle Uke, what's that?"

"What's what?" Luke asked, keeping his tone light to hide his alarm.

Another thud creaked the woodwork beside them.

"That," Meghan said, her blue eyes wide.

Luke's gut tightened as he noticed the front door had been left ajar. "Could be a squirrel," he told her. Then he remembered the other creature they'd found in a cabin the month before and forced a smile. "Or a skunk."

"Pee-yew!" Meghan said, scrunching up her nose.

Luke nodded. "Yes, skunks smell pee-yew. Stand back while I check and see."

The first of the two unfinished cabins had been framed, roofed, and sheeted with plywood; nearly complete. He stepped onto the wooden porch and adjusting his weight to his good foot, pushed the door in with the tip of his cane. Although he'd never dreamed he'd be using an old-man stick while still in his twenties, the cane did come in handy from time to time and provided him with a ready weapon—if ever he should need one.

The hinges on the door were new and didn't screech like some of the older cabins when opened. Luke waited a second to see if anything would run out. Nothing did, but another bump sounded on the inside wall, letting him know something was in there.

Something a whole lot larger than the creatures he'd mentioned to his niece.

A shot of adrenaline coursed through his veins and glancing over his shoulder, he told Meghan, "Go over to the garden and stay with your great-grandma for a moment."

He watched until the toddler had joined the eighty-year-old white haired woman a safe distance away. The day before, a few of the guests at Collins Country Cabins had reported seeing two men in black ski masks looking through their window while they were undressing. What if the peeping toms were holing up in this unfinished cabin?

Luke pressed himself against the outside wall and strained his ears to listen, but all was silent. Then, despite the limp from his left leg, he used the stealth he'd maintained from his past military training to move inside.

His first glance around the rough interior revealed a man's jacket lying on the floor. The savory scent of pepperoni pizza permeated the air. He heard a soft murmur of voices and spun toward his right, his cane raised high, ready to strike. And standing not ten feet away from him there was indeed a man...with his arms around his older sister.

Bree jumped away from her fiancĂ©, Ryan Tanner, with a start. "Luke! What are you doing here?"

"My job," he said, shooting them each a grin as he lowered the cane. "Which is more than I can say for the two of you, unless you've added kissing to your list of ranch duties."

Ryan chuckled and wrapped an arm around Bree's shoulders. "Absolutely. No cowboy can work at peak performance without a few stolen kisses."

"If you say so," Luke said, unconvinced.

"I worked all morning on the finances and future bookings," Bree informed him. "And Ryan doesn't have to lead the mini round-up until tonight."

Meghan peeked her blond, double-pony-tailed head through the doorway. "No pee-yew?"

"No skunk," Luke assured her. "Just Aunt Bree and Cowboy Ryan."

"Looks like Delaney has you working hard," Bree teased, referring to their younger sister. "She's got you baby-sitting?"

Luke picked Meghan up with one arm and lifted her onto his shoulders. "Del's getting ready to take a few guests on a trail ride, and Ma, Dad, and Grandma plan to take a trip into town, so Meghan's gonna watch me work. I need to finish siding this cabin and continue framing the next."

Bree gave him an earnest look. "We need the cabins finished before the Hamilton wedding in August."

"Don't I know it." His family was depending on his carpentry skills to get the job done and reminded him at every turn.

Luke couldn't blame them. As co-owners of Collins Country Cabins, they each needed the large amount of money the wedding with its 100-person guest list would bring in. Especially after their previous ranch managers fled at the beginning of the summer season with most of their cash. Their father had trusted Sue and Wade Randall, but when a fall from his horse landed him in the hospital, the couple used the opportunity to embezzle as much as they could.

"When are you going to start planning your own wedding?" Luke asked, trying to take the focus off himself.

Bree glanced at Ryan and smiled. "Sammy Jo agreed to help me plan an engagement party set for the end of next month, but the actual wedding won't be for another year."

Ryan nodded. "I tried to convince her to marry me now, but she says she needs time to plan out all the details."

"I just want it to be perfect," Bree said, her cheeks coloring. "And I'm hoping the Hamilton wedding will give me some good ideas. You know, I thought we could decorate all the guest cabins with white garlands and..." Bree's voice trailed off and Luke watched her gaze drift toward his cane. "Of course I'll do all the decorating. I don't expect you to have to get up on a ladder, Luke. In fact, why don't you let Ryan and I help you right now?"

Luke stiffened. "Nope. I've got this. No offense, Bree, but you don't know the first thing about construction."

"Well, then, why don't you let me watch Meghan," she persisted, "so she doesn't get in your way and—"

"Trip me?" Luke frowned. "No, I promised little Meggie that she and I would spend the afternoon together."

Bree pursed her lips and her gaze drifted toward his cane again. "But it would be easier if—"

He shook his head. "The days are longer now that it's the tail-end of June. I'll get it done," he promised.

Without anyone taking pity on me.

He knew his sister didn't mean to look at him like that, but he and his siblings hadn't seen each other for close to a year before they returned to Fox Creek to help out on their family's Montana guest ranch six weeks before. And up till then, he'd kept his injury to himself.

They still weren't used to the idea he needed a cane to get around, but then again, neither was he. The sooner he got the money for the knee surgery, the better, except...he cringed every time he thought of being knocked out for the procedure.

Greg Quinn, one of his friends in the army, survived a horrendous helicopter crash only to die twenty-four hours later due to complications from the meds used to put him to sleep prior to surgery to remove a damaged kidney.

Luke swung Meghan off his shoulders and in one swift move, set her back on her feet. "Like I said, I've got it handled."

"Okay, then," Bree said, her voice still hesitant. A second later she smiled. "If you do need help, you know where you can find us."

"Yes, I do." Luke glanced down at his niece. "We'll leave them be and work on the other cabin," he told the blond-haired cutie. "The other one's more fun anyway."

Back outside, Meghan giggled as she ran toward the open slatted two-by-fours framing up the walls of the cabin next door. "You can't catch me!"

Luke hobbled along with the help of his cane to chase after the child, but his mind remained back with Ryan and Bree.

He was happy for them. He was. They'd all grown up together and Ryan Tanner was a good man. With money. His family owned the Triple T cattle ranch, largest in Fox Creek, maybe largest in all of Gallatin County.

But only six weeks had passed since their father had been injured in a fall from his horse and Luke, Bree, and Delaney had come home. Only six weeks since their grandmother offered them each part of the ranch profits if they agreed to stay. Six weeks since Bree and Ryan had reunited after years of being apart—long enough for Ryan to have a seven-year-old son.

And now, as of last night, they were engaged. How crazy was that?

There was no way he'd ever get engaged to someone after so little time together. At least they were planning to wait a year before going through with the actual wedding. Bree said she needed time to plan but he hoped it also gave her enough time to make sure she was doing the right thing.

Of course, he had to admit she and Ryan seemed meant for each other. He glanced down at his leg. Maybe after he saved enough money and had the surgery he needed to carry his weight, he'd consider dating again. But not before then. Not until he was whole. The last thing he needed was for a country cowgirl to remind him with every soulful glance that he was damaged goods. And not the hair-raising, high-flying, bronco-bustin' cowboy he used to be.

Excerpt & Giveaway! Need Your Love by Dean Pace-Frech

n June, 1966, ACLU attorney Eron Lassiter attends his uncle’s wedding, and makes an unsettling discovery. Though he’d bowed to family pressure and has a potential marriage planned, his long-ignored attraction to other men roars to life when Garrett Emerson, the bride’s nephew, captures his attention.

After serving in the Korean War and going to college later than his peers, upwardly mobile Garrett is a loan officer at a local bank. For his girlfriend, fiancĂ© in her mind, he can’t climb fast enough. But none of that matters to Eron, and maybe that’s why Garrett’s so drawn to him.

Can Eron and Garrett find happiness amidst the still pervasive culture of propriety, honor, and expectation in the 1960s?

~*~
They finished the drive back to the apartment in silence. Eron’s sincerity had shone through when he spoke of what they had done and his lack of regret. Eron’s words eased the tension between them. At the flea market, with other people around, they had no trouble carrying on a conversation.

Garrett pulled into his parking spot and nodded toward his apartment as they got out of the car. Once inside, Eron lowered himself to the davenport and Garrett plopped down next to him.

“I’ve been a jerk,” Eron said.

“We’re both confused. Don’t be so hard on yourself. It doesn’t help that we both have girlfriends and family that only want what they think is the best for us.”

“Do you and Johnette…you know…”

“Have sex? No. I used to tell myself it was because she was a respectable girl and we should wait.”

“And now?”

“Come on, you know the answer to that. What about you and Mary Ellen?”

“Same situation.”

“Eron, why did you come see me today?”

Eron had struggled with the same question. “As much as I don’t want to be queer, I want to be with you.”

“I understand that,” Garrett said after a while. “I don’t identify with the queens that live in the city.”

“What about our jobs? Our family?”

“Could we make it work?”“I have no idea. Honestly I don’t. I’ve spent hours plotting and examining every angle and I’m more confused than I was to start. I walled up any feelings I had about other men a long time ago, but you brought them to the surface.”

~*~
The door flies open the way it always does in dressing rooms during Clown Irruption concerts. First in comes Emil. He’s long-distance-fighting with Zoe on the phone, brows drawn and trying to explain that he has been in the air or in airports all this time. Next, comes Troll, rumbling out, “Ready? We’re going straight from sound-check to doors.”

Emil scoffs, covering his ear against the tour manager. “Zee. I told you I wanted you to come along, and no, I’m not going to sleep with all of Nadia’s cousins.”

Bo snickers.

“What?” Emil presses the phone against his ear. “Of course I didn’t manage on the first try—I was chasing a moving target. You have to stay still. You can’t wiggle your butt when I’m trying to get in, Zoay.”

“TMI?” Bo suggests. I nod, feeling a blush spreading at their typical indiscretion.

“Okay, next time I’ll just buy some rope and shit,” Emil says, “and just bondage you all up. That way you can’t wiggle away. Yeah, I’ll do that.”

“Geez,” Elias mutters. “Everyone, get a room. Romance so thick in here I’m about to puke.”

Emil stuffs a finger in his ear. “No, it won’t help if you tie me down. And no, I’m pretty sure you tried to break my wiener. That’d ruin all the fun, now, wouldn’t it? Really? You don’t think so?”

“This was our room,” Bo replies to Elias. “Why didn’t you stay next door?”

“Because Emil was in there fighting with Zoe.”

“But now he’s here.”

“Yeah, there’s no peace anywhere.” Troll pops a piece of cheese in his mouth and hands Elias a bottle of water. “Here. Now, head in the game. Grab your instruments and get out there. Sound. Check.”

Adrik was deep in conversation with Valerik when they approached the porch. Their conversation terminated when Dmitri and Brennen arrived. Mischa was right behind them.

“Why is he here? He’s not a Dubrovsky. He’s your wife, so he needs to be baking in the kitchen.” Valerik spit on the snow.

Brennen lowered his eyes for a moment and when he’d had just about enough, he spoke in Russian to be sure the old man heard and understood. “That is the last cheap fucking insult you get. One more insult from you and I’ll personally take Dominika home. You’ll never see our daughter again.”

“That was uncalled for,” Dmitri shouted at Valerik. “I stand with Brennen on this. You insult my husband one more time, then you’ll never see any of us.”

“That goes for me, too. I won’t allow you to treat Brennen like this. We love him and he is part of us. You need to apologize,” Mischa said.“I agree. Brennen has been part of the Dubrovsky family since he was a child. Keep your homophobic attitude out of Christmas. We’re here to celebrate as a family. None of us will visit you ever again if you continue this abuse,” Adrik said.

Excerpt, Interview & Giveaway! Broken Records, Spotlight #1 by Lilah Suzanne

Los Angeles-based stylist Nico Takahashi loves his job—or at least, he used to. Feeling fed up and exhausted from the cutthroat, gossip-fueled business of Hollywood, Nico daydreams about packing it all in and leaving for good. So when Grady Dawson—sexy country music star and rumored playboy—asks Nico to style him, Nico is reluctant. But after styling a career-changing photo-shoot, Nico follows Grady to Nashville where he finds it increasingly difficult to resist Grady’s charms. Can Nico make peace with show business and all its trappings, or will Grady’s public persona get in the way of their private attraction to each other?

~*~
Grady presses his lips flat, looks up at the ceiling again to gather himself, sniffs and nods, then tugs Nico’s foot closer by his ankle. “Do you think... If we’d met at a bar. Or through a friend of a friend. Or the gym.” Grady’s thumb strokes the tender skin of Nico’s calf beneath the hem of his pants. “If we had just been two regular guys? We really could have been something.”

There’s a question in his voice, a hesitancy that maybe Nico would have rejected him eventually anyway. Nico scoots across the cramped bunk, crowds against Grady, shoulder to shoulder. “Well, we never would have met at the gym because I would have taken one look at you and gone home to mourn the body I’ll never have by consuming gallons of ice cream.”

Grady bumps his shoulder. “Shut up, you’re gorgeous.” He tips his head against the wall and grins. “If I’d first seen you at a bar I probably would have humiliated myself by trying to win you over with bad karaoke and shameless flirting.”

Nico’s eyebrows raise. “You mean to tell me you’ve been holding back on me? You have a level of flirting that’s even more shameless?”

“Oh yeah. You ain’t seen nothin’, sweetheart.”

“That is truly terrifying.”

Grady laughs, bright and uninhibited. Nico is so relieved to hear it, a moment of light in the darkness. Grady’s hand rests on Nico’s knee, Nico watches his own hand brush his fingers there, but he doesn’t linger.

“We aren’t, though. Just two random guys.”

Grady’s fingers flex, curving over his kneecap. “No.”

Nico exhales harshly. “I have never wanted to be a groupie so badly.”

Grady shoves at his leg. “Come on, you didn’t really think that I would do that to you—”

“In my weaker, more insecure moments?” Nico scrunches his face, embarrassed. “Yeah, I did.”

“You think that little of me, huh?” He says it with a teasing grin, but Nico’s heart sinks.

“No, Grady. I think you’re…” A million adjectives flash through his head: beautiful, amazing, stunning, compassionate, kind, generous. A supernova. He settles on, “Really special.”

Grady gives a skeptical lift of his eyebrows. “Uh oh. I’m really special, huh?”

“I’m so, so into you and it’s…” He cringes at the words but it’s true, “It’s not you, it’s me.”

“Oh lord.” Grady laments with a laugh. “Not that, please.”

“I’m the guy on the sidelines. I’m the one who makes everyone else shine. I don’t belong there, in the spotlight. I like that at the end of the day I can go home and just walk away from the cameras and the red carpets and the scrutiny. And you—you’re a star. And you can have anyone.”

Grady turns, the cramped space of the bunk making his limbs bump and nudge and curl around Nico’s body. During Grady’s shows, in the moment just before he starts singing the opening line of “Broken Records,” there’s this pause, this moment suspended in the air when the audience is silent and waiting and doesn’t even dare to inhale because in that moment, Grady’s soul is laid bare. He looks at Nico just like that and Nico can’t breathe around it.“I don’t want anyone,” he says, voice low and serious. “I want you. How do you not get that?”

~*~

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Lilah Suzanne author of Broken Records. Hi Lilah, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

Was there a basis for you story? A previous experience or something else?

I started with the idea of wanting to set a story in the South, with a Southern character, and a love story that felt a little more hard-won than my last books. Everything else fell into place after that, with a little trial and error. But no, I don’t really have much experience with being a country music singer or a stylist. Though of course my past experiences always find a way of sneaking in there, whether I want them to or not!

What skills do you think a writer needs? Stubborn defiance?

It feels like the main thing keeping me going some days... I really think the most important thing is perseverance. Any other skill can be learned and practiced, but the drive to keep going no matter what? I believe that’s what separates successful writers from unsuccessful ones. Keep going! That’s my mantra.

What for you is the perfect book hero?

I tend to like heroes who make the choice to do good and be good, rather than tortured souls who do the right thing out of regret or obligation or being chosen. A kind heart is essential for me.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

For me, writing a story feel so urgent, it’s like this clawing need to get it out on to paper as quickly as possible. So I really struggle with slowing down, giving the story a chance to settle and breathe and take my time with the moments that need to simmer slowly.

Tell us about your favorite childhood book.

I can’t possibly pick one favorite! I was a book junkie as a kid, reading at least three at a time, riding my bike to the library to load up my backpack with books. Let’s see, I recently reread Charlotte’s Web, which was one of my very favorites and I have to say it really holds up. The writing is lush and it’s the perfect little story about those last magical moments of childhood.

Excerpt & Giveaway! Illuminated Darkness by Joanne Efendi

Almost eighteen, Ashlyn Pierce is looking forward to a bright future—she’s escaped her cruel alcoholic mother and stepfather to live with her older sister, she has a job she enjoys and a man she loves—until everything abruptly falls apart when her boyfriend heartlessly dumps her for one of her best friends. Ash tries to keep the calm and controlled exterior she’s known for but, deep inside, she struggles with her heartache.

As her world crumbles, a handsome stranger suddenly appears. While falling head over heels for Wren, Ash learns she’s descended from an ancient voodoo priestess and will soon wield great power. She also discovers that Wren is more than just your everyday handsome guy. He is a four-hundred-and-fifty-year-old vampire who has been assigned to protect her from the powerful voodoo priests sent to kill her…

~*~
My voice came out in barely a whisper. “Wren, I don’t feel so great. I feel like passing out. I think maybe it’s just delayed shock or something. Nothing too much to worry about.” The room started spinning again. Grabbing both my hands, he held them up to his face and inhaled deeply. “Hmm, this isn’t good,” he murmured to himself, before looking at me to explain. “They’ve applied an ancient voodoo poison to enter your bloodstream through your wounds. Fortunately, it is slow-moving, and it hasn’t been absorbed by your system yet. I have to extract it, or it will kill you.”

“How will you do that? Get rid of the poison?” I asked weakly, but I already knew the answer.

“It won’t hurt, I promise. I have to do this, Ash, now.”

I swallowed loudly and nodded my consent for him to begin.

“First, I have to clean your wounds to remove the poison from the entry points,” he explained. He leaned his head to my hands, and began to lick the blood seeping from the wounds. My body arched and let out a small shudder that ran down my whole back. A small moan escaped my lips. I looked down and met his eyes. I felt my face flush, embarrassed slightly at my reaction. “Your hands are clean.” His voice was thick with desire.

Excerpt & Giveaway! The Love Triangle Gone Wrong by Rob Rosen

Five actors, one play, a murder, and a security guard who seeks the truth, not to mention love, all set the stage for this hilarious tale of mystery and intrigue in small town America. You’ll never guess what, or who, is going to come next!

~*~
I turned to glance at the audience, saw that everyone was suddenly and surprisingly alert and then quickly whipped my head back around to see all the actors in the play each pointing a gun at someone else in the play. It was an interesting plot twist given that the first act was more comedy—intentional or not—rather than murder mystery.

Then, BOOM, a gun went off on stage.

I jumped. The theater jumped in unison. Several people sucked in their breaths. I hoped no one was about to choke on a lozenge because mouth-to-mouth on the elderly is never fun—trust me on that one. The actress ran to one of her lovers. She knelt down by his side. Her eyes went wide. She screamed. I almost applauded. It was the best acting she’d done all day. Then she screamed again. “He’s been shot!”

“Um, duh,” I whispered to myself.

“Someone call the police!” she added.

No one moved, though I heard a few people behind me shift nervously around in their seats. One old guy coughed. I waited for a choking sound. Thankfully, it was just a cough and nothing more. Phew.

The other actors suddenly looked uneasy. I reached for my gun on instinct. Well, I reached for my can of mace actually, which was all I was allowed to legally carry, but it was still a weapon—you now, mostly. I mean, a shot of mace to the eyes can take a man down right quick. I know because I accidentally on purpose shot myself in the face with it once, just to see if mace had an expiration date. Turned out, it doesn’t.

“He’s dead!” shouted the actress hysterically.

The other actors rushed to their downed brethren. Suddenly, they didn’t all seem so, you know, acty. I too rushed the stage, taking the stairs off to the side two at a time. “Nobody move!” I shouted, can of mace held up high. They all stared up at me and grimaced. The cuckolded husband shouted, “Call the police! He really has been shot!”

Excerpt & Giveaway! Along Comes a Man by G.A. Hauser

Forty year old Freddie Oli and his longtime buddy, thirty-five year old, Barron Isaac, worked in the IT business together for years. When their company was bought out, Freddie and Barron decided to alter their career direction, and open their own landscaping business.

The two older men hire an ex-marine, Dirk Jameson, to help out. At twenty-eight, Dirk was eager to work, strong, and not to mention, gorgeous.

Although Freddie and Barron were gay, they never felt any chemistry between them, but their bond of friendship was powerful.

As Dirk begins to flirt with both men, Freddie worries that Dirk will be the demise of a good friendship and a budding business.

A strong partnership is tested as the men are faced with a handsome stud who seems to want it all.

Will this trio have a happy ending? Or will jealousy and doubt creep into their lives?

For Barron and Freddie, things were smooth sailing, until, along comes a man…

Dirk drank his hot coffee, resting a leg on each man, since it was tight for the three of them on the bench seat. He liked the idea of working outdoors, and even though he had a degree in engineering, the thought of being cooped up in an office didn’t appeal.

The two men who interviewed him, however, did appeal to him.

Barron Isaac, a fit, handsome man, who Dirk figured was in his early thirties, had incredible blue eyes. He wasn’t very tall, but his arms were sculpted and he had designer stubble and conservatively cut brown hair. On his initial interview, Dirk had met both men. They’d told him they had been cut loose from an IT company that had been bought out, so immediately Dirk knew they were bright and eager to start their own business.

Since the IT world had become a clutter of winners and losers, landscaping in southern California was a good alternative. And in December, the rains had come, and plants needed tending, and lawns mowing. And in the summer drought, many residents were opting for drought-resistant plants or removing sod for rocks.

Sipping his coffee, Dirk glanced at Freddie Oli as he drove. Dirk imagined Freddie was slightly older than Barron, but was, in Dirk’s opinion, the perfect older man fantasy. He had slightly graying temples, some laugh lines near his eyes when he smiled, and was also fit, and well built. Dirk couldn’t help but see the friendship these two men shared, and even when they teased each other, it was good-natured and fun.

Dirk liked them on sight.

And would love to fuck them. Both.

Neither man wore a wedding ring, no one spoke of wives or children, and up until this morning, Dirk assumed the men lived together. He wasn’t so sure about it now, now that Freddie had told Barron to let Dirk park his motorcycle in the garage. If Barron lived there, wouldn’t he have just done it?

Dirk had thought he had a read on these men when he first met them. Now he wasn’t so sure. It didn’t matter.

He could certainly work for two straight buddies.

Dirk took a look at each man’s crotch, seeing the bulge in their pants.

But it sure would be fun if they were gay.

Dirk relaxed in the bench seat, letting his knees touch each man’s leg, and smiled.

Barron felt the heat of Dirk’s leg on his and didn’t move away. He sipped his coffee, thinking about having a hot hunk like Dirk working with them. Maybe it was silly but the minute Dirk Jameson showed up for an interview, Barron and Freddie exchanged looks as if already hiring the handsome man on sight. Sure, they asked him the standard questions, had him fill out forms, did a quick background and credit check, but the man wasn’t a liar. Everything he had told them was true.

Fresh out of the military, marine-tough, and fucking damn handsome. Sure, it was immature for him and Freddie to hire Dirk for his appearance and power, but hell, why shouldn’t they hire him? Barron was proud to have hired a vet. He just hoped Dirk wouldn’t grow bored. This was mostly grunt work. And just as he and Freddie made the change from office and computers to outdoor and physical labor, Barron hoped doing this kind of work was something Dirk would enjoy.

Freddie parked in front of their first home. At the moment, they had a client list of only residential property. But Barron would love to build their way up to condo complexes, or better yet, hospitals and office buildings.

Freddie adjusted his ball cap and said, “Ready, boys?”

As he did, Barron could see Freddie grab Dirk’s thigh playfully, giving it a squeeze.

Dirk tossed his empty coffee cup on the floor with the other trash and said, “Let’s go.”

Barron opened his door and wondered if Dirk thought it was uncomfortable to have Freddie do that. He tried not to over think it and opened the tailgate of the truck. He hopped on and began lifting up the mower and blower, handing them to the two men standing at the tailgate.

Freddie asked Dirk, “Do you want to mow or blow?”

Barron paused to see Dirk’s reaction to that question, which obviously had a sexual innuendo.

Dirk smiled. “I’ll blow.”Oh, God. Chills rushed over Barron’s body at the sexy smile Dirk gave Freddie.
