Review! Shadow and Bone, The Grisha #1 by Leigh Bardugo

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.

My Review ...

I don’t even remember the last time I laughed so much while reading a book.

Emily and Jake meet in a club, they share once dance, two kisses, a few snarky remarks and it goes downhill from there.

She is strong, independent and she keeps everyone at arm’s length.

He is a man on a mission and his only focus is getting revenge on the man who took away everything from him.

He’s also an FBI agent and, when Emily finds herself stuck in protected custody and having to rely on Jake, well, let’s say that more than a few sparks will fly.

In her case it’s something like – how many stupid things can you do in a few days and the counting starts when she witnesses a murder.

Her bad temper, loud mouth and propensity for getting into trouble gets on Jake’s last nerve. He’s no more happy to be stuck with her than she is but Emily is his insurance ticket to finally achieve his goal.

What happens when a city girl finds herself in the middle of nowhere Texas with a crazy pair of old people as company and everything else that can be found around a farm?

One might think there’s no way she could create any more problems, right?

Jake certainly doesn’t think so. That until our girl decides to make his life a living hell by doing her best in trying to seduce him even when he swears he’ll never get involved with someone under his protection.

The banter between those two is insanely hilarious.

From the very first page you’ll find it impossible to keep a straight face.

Every single character in this book had a very specific role and, maybe for the first time, I loved each and every one of them.

Trust me, this is a book you don’t want to miss and I highly recommend it. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next volume.

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant!

Happy Reading!
